  • Perform custodial duties: clean interior, secure doors, manage supplies, and maintain safety.

Job Title: Certified Grounds Maintenance / Custodian

Department: Grounds/Custodial

Classification: Non-Exempt

Grade: Union

FTE: 1.0

Position Overview: Employees in this position perform maintenance duties on the Campus grounds and related equipment and interior cleaning and maintenance.

Days/Hours: Typical Grounds work schedule: Monday – Friday, 7:00AM – 3:30PM approximately April 15 through October 15. Typical Custodial Services schedule: Monday – Friday, 5:00AM – 1:30PM approximately October 15 through April 15 (Employees may be reassigned to Grounds during the winter months for snow emergencies or to Custodial Services during the growing season to meet departmental needs at peak hours).

Union Salary and Benefits

The full-scale wage for the Certified Grounds Maintenance/ Custodian position is $27.71 per hour. New employees will be hired with a one-year training period. At the start of the training period, wages are reduced by $2.00 per hour from the base classification rates. Employees will receive a $1.00 per hour increase after six months, and another $1.00 per hour increase after twelve months.

Essential Job Functions/Responsibilities
Grounds
  • Capable of performing all duties related to the maintenance and improvement of College grounds, including turf, landscape plantings and structures, walks, roads, and athletic fields on a seasonal basis.
  • Maintenance, accurate record keeping of service intervals, and routine trouble shooting and repair of related equipment.
  • Identify needs for periodic and major equipment repair and maintenance.
  • Adaptability to flex work schedule and temporary schedule changes, particularly for snow removal, storm damage, flooding, and other emergencies or special events.
Custodial Services
  • Lock and unlock interior and exterior doors as directed.
  • Vacuum and spot carpet and fabric furniture.
  • Report items in need of repair or replacement.
  • Guide and assist in training student employees.
  • Maintain inventory and supply order.
  • Acquire and maintain knowledge of job-related chemicals, proper labeling and environmental health and physical concerns.
  • Maintain safety, cleanliness, proper storage and use of equipment, vehicles, and personal safety equipment.
  • Removal of trash and recycling from assigned areas.
  • Dusting, washing windows, replace light bulbs and clean light fixtures.
  • Clean writing boards and maintain supply of chalk and erasers.
  • Clean and service lavatories, locker rooms, shower rooms, lounges and kitchenettes.
  • Maintain and/or renew hard floors surfaces.
  • Perform laundry related duties as directed.
  • Distribution and collection of linens, roll away beds and bed making duties, when necessary.
  • Assist with student storage.
  • Assist with sweeping/shoveling snow from all steps, walks, porches and terraces as directed, servicing smoke urns and policing grounds.
  • Move supplies, equipment, and furniture as directed and set room according to custodial work sheet and/or customer specifications.
  • Perform pest control duties.
  • Assist in coverage of absent custodial personnel job responsibilities.
  • Any other duties assigned to you by your supervisor.
Education/Experience/Skills
Required
  • Minimum high school graduate or GED.
  • Required to have two industry certifications (as approved by the supervisor).
  • Some examples include: MNLA Certified Professional.
  • MDA Pesticide Applicator License Category A, E & P.
  • MDA Pesticide Applicator License Category F aquatics. Currently available to one staff as a second certification Must obtain A, E & P prior to F.
  • Certified Irrigation Technician.
  • DNR Certified Tree Inspector.
  • ISA Certified Arborist.
  • Minimum 500 hours of relevant green industry experience, including the operation of motorized hand tools and riding equipment.
  • Training and experience in operation, repair, and preventative maintenance of related equipment.
  • Energized, positive, outgoing attitude with personal growth goals.
  • A belief in the importance of a positive customer/client experience.
  • Strong attention to detail and an organized, self-starter.
Preferred
  • Additional education in turf maintenance, horticulture, landscaping, landscape construction, irrigation, and mechanical repair and maintenance is desirable.
Additional Requirements
  • Satisfactory completion of a pre-employment physical screening exam, administered by a provider contracted by the College. Including physically able to lift/carry 50 pounds repetitively on an occasional basis.
  • Completion of a pre-employment criminal background check.
  • Possessing and maintaining a valid Minnesota driver's license and insurability as determined by the College insurance provider.
  • Must have the ability to understand and follow written and oral work instructions, operations, safety procedures, and hazardous labels.
