Job summary

Dorchester County is seeking a Detention Officer to ensure the safety of staff and inmates. The role involves supervising inmate activities, enforcing policies, and maintaining security within a 12.25-hour shift schedule.

Requires HS diploma or GED plus one year of college coursework, and a valid SC driver’s license with officer certification. A $5,000 sign-on bonus is available with restrictions; overtime may apply based on shift needs.

Qualifications

• Requires High School graduation or GED supplemented by specialized law enforcement coursework equivalent to one year of college.
• Must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license with an acceptable driving history.
• Must possess and maintain SC Officer Certification as Detention Officer (LE2 or L3).
• Must meet other requirements as set forth in applicable South Carolina statutes and regulations.

Responsibilities

• Maintains the security and safety of the detention facility, inmates and staff.
• Interviews detainees to ascertain bond hearings and housing needs; monitor access and housing assignments.
• Monitors detention access, cameras, alarms and locking systems; books inmates and processes paperwork.
• Supervises meals, visitation, recreation, medical attention and other inmate activities; conducts head counts.
