The Certified Coder is primarily responsible for ensuring correct coding guidelines, including CPT, ICD-10, modifier and carrier specific guidelines.
Essential Functions
- Working assigned coding work queues.
- Assigning CPT, HCPCS, ICD-10 codes.
- Examining documents for missing information.
- Communicating with providers as needed.
- Performing chart audits.
- Informing manager of payer-specific coding issues.
- Requesting hospital-based notes.
- Ability to meet the physical and mental demands of the position.
- The ability to work on-site.
- Predictable, reliable, and prompt attendance.
Skills And Abilities
- Understanding of CPT, ICD-10 and modifiers.
- Understanding of payer policy pertaining medical and reimbursement policies.
- Detail orientation.
- Excellent customer service skills; communicating clearly and effectively.
- Ability to multitask and remain focused while managing a high-volume, time-sensitive workload.
- Computer skills including Excel, Word and internet.

Qualifications
Education
High School Diploma or GED
Experience
- 3 Years of medical experience in either a physician practice or hospital setting.
- 1 year of coding experience required; 2 years of coding experience preferred.
- Experience in Ophthalmology and/or Otolaryngology preferred, but not required.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
Coding Certification through AAPC or AHIMA (CPC, COC, CCS-P, CCS or equivalent) required.

Work is remote, so employee should have discipline to work alone and have a dedicated workspace with high-speed internet, which offers HIPAA compliance and room large enough for two monitors.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work
Full-time 40 -hour weekly position Monday -Friday. The hours may range between 7:00a.m. and 6:00p.m.

A Typical Day in the Position
Typical responsibilities include but are not limited to monitoring assigned coding work queues, contacting payers for updates and appeals on coding related denials, addressing emails/in-baskets, addressing voicemails, communicating as needed with providers. Certified Coders are resources to providers and their clinical staff, Business Office or other departments who have coding specific questions. Certified Coders will perform provider audits on an ad-hoc basis.
