Job summary

Sagis Diagnostics in Houston, TX seeks an Experienced Pathology Coding Specialist to join our physician‑led pathology group. You will assign CPT, HCPCS, and ICD-10-CM codes for surgical pathology, hematology, and toxicology cases, while ensuring medical necessity and payer compliance.

Ideal candidates have 3–5 years of pathology coding experience, solid knowledge of Medicare and commercial payer rules, and experience with denials and appeals.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 3-5 years of pathology coding experience (required).
  • Hands‑on experience coding: Surgical pathology (88300-88399), IHC and special stains, hematology/bone marrow, toxicology.
  • Strong understanding of Medicare and Commercial Payer Rules; NCCI edits and modifier usage; medical necessity and diagnosis-driven coding.
  • Experience supporting or preparing appeals (required).
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a billing team.

Responsibilities

  • Assign accurate CPT, HCPCS, and ICD-10-CM codes for surgical pathology, podiatry-related pathology, hematology and bone marrow cases, and toxicology/molecular testing.
  • Apply pathology-specific coding rules, including add-on codes (88341/88342, 88360), bundling and NCCI edits.
  • Review pathology reports to ensure coding accuracy and medical necessity.
  • Assist with denials, appeals, and reconsiderations, including drafting appeal narratives and reviewing payer policies.
  • Collaborate with the billing, compliance, and clinical teams.
  • Identify underpayments, missed charges, and compliance risks.
  • Stay current on pathology coding updates, payer policies, and regulatory changes.

Skills & Attributes
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy
  • Excellent written communication (especially for appeals)
  • Ability to interpret pathology reports and clinical documentation
  • Organized, deadline‑driven, and compliance‑focused
Preferred
  • Experience in Dermatology, Pathology, Laboratory, or Specialty Physician Coding.
  • Additional certifications such as CPC-A, CPC-I, COC, CCS, or CRC.
  • Experience with auditing, denial management, and appeals.
