Job description

NYU Langone Hospital-Suffolk is a 306-bed medical center, providing care to residents of eastern Long Island. The hospital facility is home to the Knapp Cardiac Care Center–an advanced heart disease diagnostic and treatment facility–as well as a modern ambulatory surgical pavilion with specialized services including women's imaging, a sleep laboratory, and bariatric surgery. Our Provisional Level 2 Trauma Center delivers comprehensive and specialized care for patients with traumatic injuries. The Stroke Center at NYU Langone Hospital-Suffolk is designated by the New York State Department of Health as a Primary Stroke Center, with expert neurologists available to provide treatment 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Additionally, NYU Langone Hospital-Suffolk has multiple outpatient sites, including an outpatient wound care center, a hemodialysis center, and various primary care and specialty offices.

Position Summary

We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Central Service Technician – Full Time, Evenings – Sterile Processing Department – Full-Time – Monday.

In this role, the successful candidate will be responsible for decontamination, assembly, high‑level disinfection, and sterilization of surgical instruments and equipment; disinfect and inventory crash carts; deliver surgical instruments, supplies and equipment as necessary to meet patient needs; disinfect mobile patient equipment; stock and maintain par levels of mobile patient equipment on nursing units; maintain the work environment and stock consumable goods following infection control and safety guidelines; answer telephones and handle front‑line customer service.

Job Responsibilities
  • Responsible for surgical instruments, instrument quality, processing & preparation.
  • Responsible for decontamination of medical equipment, devices and instrumentation.
  • Responsible for sterilization of surgical instruments and devices.
  • Responsible for the high‑level disinfection process of scopes and medical devices.
  • Responsible for crash cart stocking, logistics and disinfection.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of sterilization aseptic handling and aseptic procedures.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of surgical and medical supplies.
  • Performs and documents quality assurance in assembly, sterilization, decontamination and high‑level disinfection.
  • Basic computer skills; able to navigate and operate our department system SPM.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
1. Surgical Instrument Management and Logistics
  • Identify instruments by name and design.
  • Distinguish single‑use instruments from reusable instruments.
  • Identify non‑functioning, broken, and non‑compliant instruments.
  • Perform quality assurance and tests for instrument integrity.
  • Understand Spalding classification and how to correct if clean and solid is mixed.
  • Transport sterile instruments and store them in storage locations, capturing locations in inventory operating system.
  • Transport soiled instruments according to hospital guidelines, containing contaminants and using correct containers.
2. Decontamination of Instruments and Devices
  • Receive and sort used medical devices & instruments; identify the type of device, check for damage, and separate items based on manufacturer instructions for cleaning.
  • Disassemble instruments and devices following manufacturer instructions to ensure proper cleaning of all surfaces.
  • Operate washers according to manufacturer guidelines.
  • Follow organizational guidelines for manual cleaning.
  • Wear appropriate PPE and follow infection control guidelines.
  • Follow universal precaution standards.
  • Document all chemicals in accordance with hospital policy.
3. High‑Level Disinfection of Instruments and Devices
  • Identify semi‑critical and critical devices and the correct processing method for each.
  • Wear appropriate PPE and follow infection control guidelines and standards.
  • High‑level disinfect endoscopes and accessories, handling logistics and storage.
  • Disinfect mobile patient equipment, handling logistics and storage on nursing units.
  • Set up, maintain and operate washers and automated endoscope preprocessors in accordance with manufacturer guidelines.
  • Document process in the instrument inventory operating system.
4. Crash Carts
  • Stock crash carts accurately to pick lists for each drawer.
  • Follow the ordering process for needed supplies.
  • Document quantity of each item accurately, capturing the earliest expiration date.
  • Disinfect cart between uses prior to stocking.
  • Handle logistics of clean and soiled carts when needed.
  • Document lock numbers in conjunction with pharmacy.
5. Sterilization Steam and Low Temperature

Label trays and peel pouches for sterilization in accordance with hospital policy.

Monitor all physical and mechanical indicators necessary to meet sterilization parameters.

Monitor and process biological indicators and log daily testing information accurately.

  • Document sterilizer load parameters accurately in accordance with hospital policy.
  • Operate sterilizers according to manufacturer guidelines.

Load sterilizer in accordance with established guidelines to ensure that steam contacts all necessary surfaces of devices.

6. Quality Assurance and Documentation
  • Recognize and adhere to medical center and departmental infection control policies and procedures.
  • Follow aseptic procedures in all areas.
  • Participate in continuous quality improvement process.
  • Document all sterilization parameters according to policy.
  • Document all HLD parameters according to policy.
  • Fill out all supply requisitions accurately following organization standards.
  • Document processes and testing results in inventory operating system.
Minimum Qualifications

To qualify you must have a high school diploma or equivalent. Certification from the Certification for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD) Certified or Registered Central Service Technician (HSPA) Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST); provisional certification is acceptable. 400 hours of on‑hands training will need to be achieved prior to the expiration of the provisional certification.
