Job Responsibilities

• Responsible for surgical instruments, instrument quality, processing & preparation.
• Responsible for decontamination of medical equipment, devices and instrumentation.
• Responsible for sterilization of surgical instruments and devices.
• Responsible for high‑level disinfection of scopes and medical devices.
• Responsible for crash cart stocking, logistics and disinfection.
• Demonstrates knowledge of sterilization aseptic handling and aseptic procedures.
• Demonstrates knowledge of surgical and medical supplies.
• Performs and documents quality assurance in assembly, sterilization, decontamination and high‑level disinfection.
• Basic computer skills; able to navigate and operate the department system SPM.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
• Surgical instrument management and logistics.
• Identifies instruments by name and design.
• Distinguishes single‑use instruments from reusable instruments.
• Identifies non‑functioning, broken and non‑compliant instruments.
• Performs quality assurance and tests for instrument integrity.
• Understands Spalding classification and corrects mix of clean and solid.
• Transports sterile instruments; stores and records locations in inventory system.
• Transports soiled instruments following hospital guidelines and using correct containers.
• Operates washers according to manufacturer guidelines.
• Follows organizational guidelines for manual cleaning.
• Wears appropriate PPE and follows infection control guidelines.
• Follows universal precaution standards.
• Documents chemicals in accordance with hospital policy.
• High‑level disinfection of instruments and devices.
• Identifies semi‑critical and critical devices and correct processing method for each.
• Handles logistics and storage of endoscopes and accessories.
• Disinfects mobile patient equipment; handles logistics and storage on nursing units.
• Sets up, maintains and operates washers and automated endoscope preprocessors per manufacturer guidelines.
• Documents process in the instrument inventory operating system.
• Completes crash cart stocking accurately to pick lists for each drawer.
• Follows ordering process for needed supplies.
• Documents quantity of each item, capturing earliest expiration date.
• Disinfects cart between uses prior to stocking.
• Handles logistics of clean and soiled carts.
• Documents lock numbers with Pharmacy.
• Monitors all physical and mechanical indicators necessary to meet sterilization parameters.
• Monitors and processes biological indicators; logs daily testing information accurately.
• Documents sterilizer load parameters accurately per hospital policy.
• Operates sterilizers per manufacturer guidelines.
• Participates in continuous quality improvement process.
• Documents all sterilization and HLD parameters per policy.
• Fills out supply requisitions accurately per organization standards.

Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or equivalent.

• Certification from the Certification for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD) – Certified or Registered Central Service Technician (HSPA) or Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST).
• Provisional certification acceptable; 400 hours of hands‑on training required before provisional certification expires.
