Job summary

University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee is seeking a Central Plant Operator I to monitor, operate, adjust, maintain, and repair campus heating and cooling systems, including boilers and large chillers.

This on-site role requires lifting up to 50 pounds, working at heights up to 35 feet with fall protection, and wearing PPE per policy. Regular shifts include overtime and weekends, and compensation is $26.50–$29.50 per hour, with duties performed on campus satellite facilities as needed.

Qualifications

• Six months of maintenance experience or equivalent training.
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
• Ability to work at heights up to 35 feet with fall protection.
• Ability and willingness to wear required PPE.
• Ability to work overtime and all shifts including weekends/holidays.
• On-site work at campus facilities.

Responsibilities

• 45% - Perform emergency, routine, and preventative maintenance on central plant equipment.
• Repair failed equipment as directed; report if not repairable within current shift.
• Assist in operation of boilers, chillers, and auxiliary equipment.
• Monitor and adjust control systems as directed by leadership.
• Record information on logs and data sheets per procedures; conduct water testing per guidelines.
• 10% - Address urgent needs under supervision; perform basic commissioning and shutdown tasks.
• Maintain clear communication between shifts to ensure smooth operations.
