TITLE: Center Store Assistant
DEPARTMENT: Center Store
STATUS: FT, Assistant, Union, Hourly
REPORTS TO: Center Store Manager
JOB SUMMARY: To ensure the highest level of service possible to Outpost’s internal and external customers. Supervise and motivate Center Store (Grocery & Personal Wellness) staff to uphold high standards in the department. Order product to maintain a fully stocked department. Ensure a well-maintained, clean, and efficient Center Store department.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Fast-paced retail floor. Regular work near moving mechanical parts (i.e., baler, dock equipment). Ability to work in moderate and loud noise environments including, but not limited to: computers, paging, telephones, human voices, and machinery. Position requires working during busy retail times, which include weekends, afternoons, and evenings.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Customer Service
- Treat people fairly, consistently, and with respect.
- Ensure efficient, informative, and friendly service according to established customer service standards.
2. Center Store Department Responsibilities
Department Operations
- Provide product information to educate customers without prescribing products.
- Stay up to date on products Outpost carries and industry trends.
- Be aware of the Dietary Supplements and Health Education Act and related legislation.
- Properly record credits, returns, and losses.
- Keep aisles, backstock, and storage areas clean, neat, and debris-free.
- Maintain an organized layout of back stock areas.
- Uphold safety guidelines to ensure staff safety.
- Advise Department Manager of equipment or replacement needs.
- Assist with department resets and quarterly inventory.
- Supervise all department operations in the absence of the Center Store Manager.
- Attend department meetings as scheduled.
Ordering and Receiving
- Order from vendors as assigned to ensure the department is fully stocked while minimizing inventory.
- Receive and process deliveries, checking product condition and invoice accuracy.
- Ensure timely stocking of deliveries.
- Handle perishable products properly to ensure safety and quality.
- Assist with product returns and credit processing.
- Report product or supplier issues to the Department Manager.
- Maintain inventory control through accurate recording of losses and markdowns, and assist in inventories.
- Recommend product line changes, reductions, eliminations, or sales to the Center Store Manager.
- Ensure display areas are fully stocked, rotated, and properly faced.
- Maintain clean and orderly shelves, displays, and storage areas.
- Ensure shelf tags and sale signs are accurate and properly displayed.
- Request signage as needed.
- Set up and maintain displays, endcaps, and shippers.
- Assist in maintaining proper product shelf space and merchandising guidelines.
Personnel
- Assign daily tasks to staff and ensure productivity.
- Encourage staff to excel and provide guidance and motivation.
- Replace vacant shifts and notify the manager of staffing issues.
- Ensure staff follow department SOPs.
- Assist in employee performance evaluation and communicate policy changes.
Other
- Perform all duties outlined in department job descriptions.
- Perform manager duties in their absence.
3. All Staff Duties
- Follow all Co-op policies and procedures.
- Maintain store cleanliness and orderliness.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:
- Experience with stocking, ordering, and receiving in retail.
- Supervisory experience.
- Knowledge of personal wellness products is preferred.
Ability to delegate tasks and motivate staff effectively.
