Job summary

Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Veterans Services seeks a Cemetery Caretaker Manager to lead, supervise, and manage cemetery maintenance teams at the Suffolk cemetery.

On-site leadership role overseeing grounds operations, burial processes, and adherence to SOPs. Requires outdoor work in all weather, strong communication and team-building skills, and experience in turf management and building maintenance. Salary $65,000-$67,000 with a Pay Band 4 classification.

Qualifications

• Outdoor work in all-weather environments.
• Experience leading cemetery grounds maintenance crews and performing evaluations.
• Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite.
• Familiar with turf management including trees, shrubs and flower beds.
• Experience in building maintenance and general repair work.
• Knowledge of preventive maintenance and inventory control.
• Strong communication, decision-making and coaching abilities.

Responsibilities

• Directly reports to Cemetery Superintendent and leads Senior/Team Leads and Maintenance Technician on site.
• Oversees safe operation of cemetery grounds and burial processes in coordination with cemetery leadership.
• Verifies grave/cremation/memorial sites prior to opening and documents placements.
• Trains staff to use maps for locating and opening graves and memorials per SOPs.
• Supervises subordinates to ensure tasks are completed safely and equipment is utilized.
• Performs additional duties as assigned by Cemetery leadership.
