Job summary

CDM Smith's Transportation Construction, Engineering and Inspection team in Rodanthe, NC seeks an inspector to monitor construction activities at project sites. The role requires performing complex inspections across roadway, bridges, drainage, erosion & control, and maintenance & traffic, with supervision based on demonstrated knowledge.

Qualified candidates will possess knowledge of highway construction materials, methods and equipment, the ability to read plans, and strong communication

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• 4 years of related inspection experience; additional related experience considered.
• Valid driver’s license required.
• Domestic and/or international travel may be required; frequency depends on duties.

Responsibilities

• Perform complex and routine inspections of construction to determine if appropriate materials and processes are used and if construction conforms to plans, specifications and special provisions.
• Use higher‑grade equipment and perform complex calculations for construction inspection.
• Work under limited or direct supervision based on demonstrated knowledge for the assignment.
• Review drawings to prepare for the construction inspection.
• Understand the design of the construction to be inspected.
• Document and communicate the results of the inspection to the supervisor.

Our Transportation Construction, Engineering and Inspection group assists the federal, public, private and international organizations with construction services that meet community needs. CDM Smith’s CEI team in Rodanthe, NC seeks an inspector to examine and monitor construction activities at the project site(s). The candidate must be able to perform complex inspection activities for at least two of the five required inspection categories: Roadway, Bridges, Drainage, Erosion & Control, and Maintenance & Traffic. The role may involve limited or direct supervision depending on the demonstrated knowledge and assignment.

Required knowledge includes materials, methods and equipment used in highway construction, geometry and basic mathematics, ability to read, interpret and explain construction plans, drawings, contract provisions and specifications, and communication skills.

Primary Responsibilities

• Perform complex and routine inspections of construction to determine if appropriate materials and processes are used and if construction conforms to plans, specifications and special provisions.
• Use higher‑grade equipment and perform complex calculations for construction inspection.
• Work under limited or direct supervision based on demonstrated knowledge for the assignment.

Skills and Abilities

• Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing in English.
• Basic knowledge of arithmetic.
• Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.).
• Ability to adapt to new technologies and quickly learn new computer, smartphone or related applications and programs.
• Basic knowledge of materials, methods and equipment used in highway construction.
• Ability to read and understand construction plans, drawings, contract provisions and specifications.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Certifications from a State Highway Agency or National Entity such as ACI or NICET in earthwork, asphalt or concrete if required by the client or jurisdiction.
• Valid driver’s license.
• 4 years of related experience; additional directly related experience considered.
• Domestic and/or international travel may be required; frequency depends on duties.

Driving Requirements & Travel

An appropriate and valid driver’s license is required.

Travel: 20% – 40% of the time.
