Job summary

Waggoner Engineering, Inc. seeks a CE&I Level 2 Inspector – Transportation to support projects in the Birmingham or Huntsville, AL area.

You will inspect major construction activities, perform field surveying, and complete engineering computations and field testing to ensure adherence to quality and code requirements. The role requires 5+ years of CEI experience or a Civil Engineering degree with 1 year of related work, strong written communication, and the ability to travel as needed.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 5+ years CEI experience or Civil Engineering degree +1 year experience.
  • Strong written communication and comprehension skills.
  • Ability to work responsibly and independently.
  • Physical endurance for outdoor work; lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Valid driver’s license and clean MVR.
  • Able to travel daily or overnight as needed.
  • Background check and drug screening required.
  • ACI and ALDOT certifications listed in qualifications.
  • ALDOT or APNGA Radiological Safety Course Certification.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain daily field inspection records and track QA progress.
  • Monitor construction activities for conformance to quality and code requirements.

  • Provide documentation for area and equipment turnovers.

CEI Level 2 Inspector - Transportation

Department: Transportation

Employment Type: Full Time

Location: Huntsville, AL

Reporting To: George Chapman

Compensation: $25.00 - $36.00 / hour

Description

Waggoner Engineering is seeking an experienced CE&I Level 2 Inspector – Transportation to support projects in the Birmingham or Huntsville, AL area. In this role, you will independently inspect major construction activities and perform technical assignments involving field surveying, construction layout, engineering computations, construction inspections, and field testing. You will help ensure construction activities meet applicable quality, performance, specification, and code requirements while supporting the successful delivery of transportation projects.

Key Responsibilities
  • Independently inspect major work activities and perform assignments involving field surveying and construction layout, marking, checking engineering computations, inspecting construction work, and conducting field tests.
  • Perform specialized inspection and testing duties.
  • Perform daily field inspections and maintain accurate inspection records.
  • Monitor construction activities for conformance with quality, performance, specification, and/or code requirements.
  • Work under the general supervision of the Senior Inspector, using experience and judgment to plan and accomplish project goals.
  • Assist with on-the-job training for new employees.
  • Maintain safe work areas.
  • Participate in punch lists, testing, and commissioning activities.
  • Track quality assurance progress.
  • Provide documentation and input for area and equipment turnovers.
What you’ll need
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 5 or more years of related CEI experience, or a Civil Engineering degree plus 1 year of related experience, including work on ALDOT projects.
  • Strong written communication and comprehension skills.
  • Ability to work responsibly and independently.
  • Physical endurance to work in various outdoor environments, including extreme heat and cold, with the ability to occasionally lift items or objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work at outdoor worksites, including roadways and construction sites, with exposure to traffic, construction zones, heavy equipment, and inclement weather.
  • Ability to accommodate daily travel and/or overnight stays depending on project needs.
  • Valid driver's license and clean Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).
  • Ability to successfully complete a drug screening and background check.
  • ACI and ALDOT Certified Concrete Technician
  • ALDOT Certified Asphalt Roadway Technician
  • ALDOT or APNGA Radiological Safety Course Certification
Preferred qualifications include:
  • ALDOT Certified Asphalt Technician Level I – Field Tester
  • ALDOT Certified Level II – Quality Management Technician
  • ADEM Qualified Credentialed Inspector (QCI)
  • ALDOT Work Zone Safety Certification
  • ALDOT Unbound Earthwork Course Certification
  • ALDOT Plan Reading Course
  • OSHA training in Trench Safety and Electrical Hazards from Overhead and Underground Utilities
  • Working knowledge of CAMMS
