Job summary

S&ME is hiring Construction Engineering and Inspection (CEI) Inspectors to join our Transportation team across North Carolina. You will oversee contractor work, perform inspections, and ensure safety, quality, and regulatory compliance on projects from Asheville to Wilmington.

This mid-level or lead technician role involves independent work on medium projects or teamwork on larger jobs, with potential for certifications to boost compensation.

Qualifications

• Requires active NCDOT certifications such as QMS Roadway, Conventional Density, Concrete Field Technician, Erosion Control Level II, and/or Nuclear Gauge.
• Excellent written and verbal English communication skills.
• Solid math skills with understanding of weight, volume, pressure, and measurement units.
• Flexibility to work variable schedules and travel as needed.
• Experience in highway construction or inspection preferred.

Responsibilities

• Oversee construction activities (earthmoving, paving, bridge work) to ensure plans, specs, and safety standards are met.
• Inspect erosion control and environmental compliance; perform material sampling and testing.
• Prepare detailed daily inspection reports; document contractor performance and process payments.
• Perform calculations and maintain records of material quantities; help meet project timelines.
• Attend progress and safety meetings; coordinate with engineers and stakeholders to resolve issues.
• Support DBE/EEO compliance surveys to verify inclusivity in the workforce.
