This Correctional Support Trades Supervisor I (CSTS I) is a Boiler Operator for the Colorado Department of Corrections (CDOC) at the Sterling Correctional Facility. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: ensuring the safety and security of the general public, facility staff and inmates; ensuring safe and efficient boiler operations and supervising and training inmate workers. This position prepares inmates for community reentry by promoting the Colorado Department of Corrections Mission and Vision while adhering to a high level of integrity and commitment.
Maintains safety and security of facility and work sites; through clear and accurate communication trains and guides inmates in the proper use of controlled items, tools, equipment and chemicals; enforces security procedures by conducting work site searches and monitoring workplace environment and inmate behavior, paying close attention to changes, inappropriate activity or potential problems; initiates verbal reprimands when warranted and, if necessary, physically controls inmates with the proper application of restraints or "use of force" techniques; monitors, supervises and escorts inmates according to policy and limits inmate access to restricted areas; performs inmate counts and transportation; responds to emergency situations such as fights, fires and escapes according to policy and writes and submits required reporting. Through conscientious observation, clear communications and adherence to agency Administrative Regulations, facility Implementation Adjustments and the Code of Penal Discipline, promotes a safe and secure environment.
Ensures the safe, efficient, compliant and cost-effective completion of all phases of boiler house operations; conducts regular checks, reads gauges, works on water heaters, air handlers, heat exchange pumps and steam traps; ensures complete preventive, predictive and corrective maintenance on boiler and associated peripheral systems and equipment.
Provides supervision of assigned inmate workers; promotes a high level of performance by setting the work standard according to agency mission, vision and values. Participates in the hiring of inmates, trains and instructs inmates in boiler operations and proper use of tools and equipment. Creates schedules, assigns work and conducts job evaluations; monitors hours, posts wages and updates records. Exemplifies a professional workforce that embodies honesty, integrity, and ethical behavior. Provides real life, meaningful work experience to prepare inmates for community reentry.
Ensures compliance with Colorado Boiler Code, International Mechanical Code, American Correctional Association and all applicable policy, regulations and standards; tracks usage of tools, equipment and parts, expenses and waste to remain within budget, and uses due diligence to discover inefficiencies to reduce waste and prevent theft.
May be required to work additional hours or shifts to maintain security. Works in close proximity to industrial equipment and in a relatively loud and busy atmosphere.

Candidates must have four (4) years of employment experience as a utility plant or boiler operator performing maintenance on steam or hydronic hot water boilers and associated systems, or installing and repairing boiler systems, or equivalent experience including HVAC systems with boilers above 15 psi. Experience can be combined with formal apprenticeship or degree programs. Specific competencies include strong work ethic, sound judgment, communication skills, proficiency in boiler operations, ability to troubleshoot, and adherence to regulations. Preferred qualifications include related state work experience, certifications, and supervisory experience.
