Job summary

City of Glendale, Arizona seeks a skilled Equipment Operator to operate heavy automotive and specialized equipment within the Sanitation Division of the Public Works Department. The role includes routine maintenance, safety checks, logkeeping, and ensuring quality in refuse and recyclable collection and sorting processes.

Experience with CDL-required city vehicles is essential, along with the ability to interpret street layouts and follow safety rules.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of operation of heavy equipment and safety rules in heavy equipment operation.
• Ability to read and follow traffic laws, street layouts and routes.

Responsibilities

• Operate heavy automotive and specialized equipment including street sweeper, one-man sanitation truck, 40-yard container, truck and trailer.
• Operate brush tractor with grapple buckets and hand load rear-loaders, balers, sorting lines, crane trucks and forklifts.
• Fill street sweeper water tanks and regulate valves controlling water supply.
• Empty containers into the sanitation truck and operate hydraulic packer to compact refuse; identify non-collectable waste.
• Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on equipment; fueling, oil checks, radiator, tire pressure; replace gutters and belts as needed.
• Perform safety checks on equipment.
• Monitor quality of refuse collection, recyclable collection, and sorting/baling of recyclables.
• Operate portable radios and keep daily work logs (mileage, tons dumped, equipment condition).
• Complete accident reports and time sheets; issue public violation notifications and corrective action tags.
• Repair and deliver containers for commercial and residential customers.
• Operate city vehicles requiring a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
• Perform other related duties as assigned.
