Job summary

Roadmaster Drivers School, a division of Werner Enterprises, seeks an experienced CDL Class A driver to become a CDL instructor in Houston, TX. The role involves mentoring students, delivering safety-focused instruction, and ensuring adherence to company standards.

This full-time position follows a Monday–Friday schedule with weekends and holidays off. The ideal candidate has a CDL Class A license, 3+ years driving experience, and the ability to teach and lead through practical exercise.

Qualifications

• Valid CDL Class A license with limited violations in the past 12–24 months.
• Minimum 3 years over‑the‑road or local driving experience.
• Must pass DOT physical and DOT drug tests (including hair follicle) and consent to random testing.
• Ability to communicate effectively and deliver training to students.
• Complete onboarding and ongoing training as required.

Responsibilities

• Demonstrate assigned driving operations for students regularly.
• Oversee safe operation and use of equipment and ensure policy compliance.
• Supervise trainees and complete attendance forms and training records.
• Provide in-person daily instruction in Pre‑Trip, Basic Control Skills and Road Driving.

Job Responsibilities:

• Demonstrate assigned driving operations for students on a regular basis
• Oversee the safe operation and use of equipment when being used by students, ensuring that the company policy and standards are being adhered to
• Supervise all assigned trainees and complete the necessary documentation for each person, such as student attendance forms and training records
• Provide in-person daily instruction to students in the following areas: Full Pre-Trip Inspection, Basic Control Skills and Road Driving

Qualifications:

• A valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL), with no more than two moving violations in a 12-month period, and/or no more than three moving violations in a 24-month period. Driving records not complying with the foregoing will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
• Must have a minimum of 3 years over the road or local commercial driving experience, and/or minimum criteria required to obtain instructor licensure within the applicable jurisdiction and meet all other licensure requirements.
• Must pass and continuously maintain a U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) physical which is issued in accordance with all regulations and recommendations of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, pass an approved DOT drug test and hair follicle drug test (HFT) and agree to random and suspicion-based drug and alcohol screening.
• Must have the ability to effectively communicate with others using verbal and non-verbal/written skills.
• Must possess and demonstrate the physical, intellectual and leadership ability to deliver the company’s approved training and curriculum to students in the areas of classroom, full pre-trip inspection, basic control skills and road driving.
• Must successfully complete all required new hire onboarding and training in a timely manner, as well as continuing education as required by the company.
