Job summary

The Personnel Board of Jefferson County Alabama is seeking a Truck Driver in the Merit System to operate a heavy-duty truck requiring a CDL, and to transport personnel, materials, and equipment between work sites. The role includes maintaining the vehicle, documenting daily activities, and potentially leading a small crew.

Qualified applicants will hold a Class B CDL and have experience with heavy trucks and pre-trip inspections.

Qualifications

• Class B commercial driver's license.
• Experience working with or around heavy trucks (e.g., street paving, flagging, refuse collection).
• Experience conducting a pre-trip inspection (e.g., checking fluids, brakes, tires).

Responsibilities

• Oversees and assists crews performing activities such as maintaining/clearing right-of-ways, brush and trash removal, cleaning/maintaining storm sewers, patching and repairing roads, etc.
• Conducts pre-trip inspections on heavy duty trucks by checking for needed maintenance in order to ensure components on trucks are in good working order prior to operating the truck.
• Operates a heavy-duty truck in order to transport and deliver personnel, equipment, and materials to and from work sites.
• Performs wrap-up activities at the conclusion of each day such as post-trip inspection, gathering and storing tools and equipment, completing daily work sheets, and refueling equipment.
• Prepares for work at work sites by ensuring safety equipment is worn, unloading supplies and equipment, ensuring flaggers are set up properly to direct traffic around the work site in order to ensure the safety of crewmembers on the work site.
• Reviews work orders and meets with supervisor to determine supplies, equipment, and personnel needed on the work site, and oversees the loading of equipment to ensure it is properly secured prior to departure.
