Job Summary

As the Equipment Operator, you will ultimately be responsible for operating heavy equipment to support underground utility construction, excavation, and infrastructure installation projects while maintaining a safe work environment. You will safely operate, transport, inspect, and maintain construction equipment while supporting field crews in completing underground utility installations. As the Equipment Operator, your customers are internal construction teams, project managers, and telecommunications clients, and you will make meaningful contributions to the company's success through safe equipment operation, quality workmanship, and efficient project execution.

Key Responsibilities
  • Operate heavy equipment in compliance with company safety policies and procedures
  • Load, unload, transport, and haul heavy equipment using trucks and trailers
  • Perform routine inspections, maintenance, and documentation for assigned equipment
  • Safely set up, operate, and break down equipment at job sites
  • Operate heavy equipment around active underground utilities while preventing utility strikes
  • Read and interpret utility locate markings and develop safe excavation plans before beginning work
  • Install conduit in open trenches and proof conduit installations
  • Perform potholing to expose existing underground utilities
  • Assist with rigging and setting structures
  • Perform concrete forming, pouring, asphalt placement, and other underground construction activities as required
  • Inspect and maintain equipment to ensure safe and efficient operation
  • Communicate with supervisors regarding job requirements, project progress, and equipment needs
  • Adhere to all company policies, OSHA regulations, ANSI standards, and applicable safety requirements
  • Work overtime and weekends as business needs require
  • Additional responsibilities within functional scope based on business needs
Required Qualifications
Education, Licensing, and Certifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Valid driver's license
  • Active Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A required
  • DOT Medical Card required
Experience
  • Minimum one year of experience operating heavy equipment near active underground utilities
  • Experience using locating equipment and utility locating systems
  • Experience operating asphalt rollers, skid steers, backhoes, mini excavators, vacuum trucks, directional bore machines, and similar heavy equipment
  • Experience with Ditch Witch and Vermeer equipment preferred
  • Experience with basic shoring methods preferred
Skills And Abilities
  • Ability to safely operate heavy equipment in active construction environments
  • Ability to read and interpret construction plans and specifications
  • Knowledge of OSHA regulations, ANSI standards, and safe excavation practices
  • Knowledge of underground utility locating systems and utility avoidance procedures
  • Basic computer proficiency
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills
  • Ability to inspect, troubleshoot, and maintain assigned equipment
  • Ability to manage multiple responsibilities while maintaining a strong safety focus
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience operating Ditch Witch and Vermeer equipment
  • Experience with underground telecommunications or utility construction
  • Knowledge of trench safety, excavation, and shoring systems
  • Additional heavy equipment certifications or specialized operator training
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Ability to maintain visual and audible awareness of crew members, equipment, vehicles, and surrounding hazards
  • Ability to work safely around heavy equipment and moving machinery
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, squat, kneel, climb, push, pull, twist, and perform physically demanding work for extended periods
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment, including safety boots, hard hat, safety glasses, and other required PPE
  • Ability to work overtime and weekends as business needs require
