Job description

Environmental Field Chemist at Clean Harbors

Clean Harbors in Baton Rouge is seeking an Environmental Field Chemist (CleanPack Chemist) responsible for handling, segregating, packing, and inspecting chemical waste in accordance with Federal, State, and Local regulations, as well as company policies. This role involves working both indoors and outdoors at various sites, including plants, labs, and customer locations. The position is customer-facing and not laboratory-based.

Key Responsibilities
  • Prioritize health and safety by following all safe work practices and policies
  • Prepare packing lists, labels, manifests, and disposal notifications
  • Inspect storage areas and drums for leaks, spills, and compliance with labeling regulations
  • Properly package and segregate waste chemicals for disposal
  • Perform job tasks at customer sites, including Fortune 500 companies
  • Ensure all projects meet OSHA, EPA, DOT, and company standards before shipment
  • Conduct sampling and profiling of waste streams as needed
  • Verify drum counts and conditions for shipping compliance
  • Operate vehicles safely according to DOT and local regulations
  • Follow all environmental health and safety guidelines
  • Perform additional duties as assigned
Required Qualifications
  • Valid Driver's license
  • Strong customer service skills
  • Ability to obtain CDL Class B with hazmat and tanker endorsements within 6 months
  • Ability to perform physical tasks as required
  • Successful completion of background check, drug test, and physical
  • Compliance with OSHA facial hair standards for respirator use
Preferred Qualifications
  • Degree in Chemistry or Natural Science
  • Experience in environmental services such as remediation, abatement, or spill response

This entry-level position offers a pathway into management and other advanced roles within Clean Harbors. We provide accelerated training, and opportunities to transfer across our 200+ locations. After approximately 18-36 months, high performers can advance to salaried management roles.
