Qualifications

  • Previous highway construction or equipment operator experience.
  • Valid Class A or B commercial driver license.
  • Ability to travel weekly for projects located out of town.
  • Ability to safely drive assigned vehicles and mobile equipment.
  • Ability to implement construction practices and use hand and power tools and equipment in construction.
  • Basic mathematical skills.
  • Ability to comprehend and apply oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to complete work accurately, timely, and safely under minimal supervision.

Salary: $26.00 Annually

Summary:Perform physical labor and operate commercial and non-commercial vehicles and mobile equipment completing highway and heavy construction projects.

Essential Functions may include, but are not limited to:

  • Operate hand and power tools of all types: air hammers, earth tampers, cement mixers, small mechanical hoists, surveying and measuring equipment, and a variety of other equipment and instruments.
  • Measure, mark, and record openings and distances to lay out areas where construction work will be performed.
  • Build and position forms for pouring concrete, and dismantle forms after use, using saws, hammers, nails, or bolts.
  • Erect and disassemble scaffolding, shoring, braces, traffic barricades, ramps, and other temporary structures.
  • Dig ditches or trenches, backfill excavations, and compact and level earth to grade specifications, using picks, shovels, pneumatic tampers, and rakes.
  • Drive to and between job sites.
  • Operate jackhammers and drills to break up concrete or pavement.
  • Tend pumps, compressors, and generators to provide power for tools, machinery, and equipment, or to heat and move materials such as asphalt.
  • Signal equipment operators to facilitate alignment, movement, and adjustment of machinery, equipment, and materials.
  • Control traffic passing near, in, and around work zones.
  • Load, unload, and identify building materials, machinery, and tools, and distribute them to the appropriate locations, according to project plans and specifications.
  • Lubricate, clean, and repair machinery, equipment, and tools.

Required Qualifications:

Work is performed in primarily outdoor environments with constant exposure to noise, dust, fumes, noxious odors, gases, mechanical and electrical hazards, moving objects, sharp edges, and temperature extremes.

Physical Demands:

  • Frequent operation of equipment with vibrating and moving parts.
  • Frequent and repeated hand and arm movement to manipulate tools, handles, and levers.
  • Frequent and repeated lifting from ground to various heights up to 50 pounds individually, and team lifting heavier items.
  • Frequent and repeated exerting of force up to 100 pounds.
  • Constant standing / walking for up to eight (8) hours per day.
  • Frequent walking on uneven and / or unpaved terrain.
  • Frequent climbing steps, ladders, and in/out/onto vehicles.
  • Frequent and repeated bending, stooping, crawling, kneeling, reaching, and crouching.
  • Visual acuity to drive, distinguish electrical wire colors, perform manual detailed work, and to read printed and electronic documents.
  • Manual dexterity to frequently manipulate, handle, and feel.
  • Hearing capacity to receive, perceive, and react to common construction and road environment noises.
  • Daily operation of a motor vehicle or other mobile equipment for extended periods of time up to eight (8) hours per day, driving to and between work locations.
  • Constant use of personal protective equipment (PPE) necessary for working safely.
