Job summary

City of Buffalo is seeking a Water Service Worker to perform skilled repetitive manual labor in installing, maintaining, and repairing components of the city water distribution system under supervision.

Responsibilities include valve and hydrant work, taps on water mains, backfilling, operating jackhammer, caulking joints, driving repair trucks, and routine vehicle maintenance. A NYS Class B CDL is required within six months of appointment.

Qualifications

• Requires continuous/permanent status as Water Service Worker for 1 year.
• Requires 1+ year of full-time experience in installation/maintenance of water mains and/or service lines.
• Must possess Class B NYS Commercial Driver's License within 6 months of appointment and maintain it.

Responsibilities

• Installs, checks, relocates and reconditions valves, valve boxes, hydrants, water mains and fittings.
• Checks service lines and installs taps on water mains.
• Operates valves to isolate areas during breaks and restores service.
• Performs excavations and backfilling; uses jackhammer and soil tamper.
• Pours lead and caulks joints; installs mechanical fittings; shuts off/turns on pumps.

Job description

This position is skilled repetitive manual labor work involving responsibility for efficiently making plumbing installations and performing maintenance work on the city water system. Work is performed under the immediate supervision of the Caulker Supervisor and directions are received as to work to be performed. No supervision is exercised over employees.

• Installs, checks, relocates and reconditions valves, valve boxes, hydrants, water mains and special fittings;
• -checks service lines;
• Installs taps on water mains;
• Operates distribution system valves to segregate areas affected by water main breaks and makes repairs to restore water service;
• Makes excavations and backfills;
• Assists in the operation of jackhammer and soil tamper machines;
• Pours lead and caulks joints to make repairs to existing cast iron water mains;
• Installs mechanical pipe fittings for repair or new pipe installations;
• Shuts off and turns on water pumps;
• Maintains tools, supplies and equipment relative to water distribution repairs;
• Drives repair truck to and from job sites;
• - may perform preventive maintenance to vehicles;
• - periodically cleans assigned repair crew truck and appurtenances;
• Performs related work as required.

• Applicants must have continuous and permanent status as a Water Service Worker for one year.
• Applicants must have an additional year of full-time experience in the installation or maintenance work involving water mains and/or service lines.
• Applicants must have one year of full-time experience in the installation or maintenance work involving water mains and/or service lines.
• Applicants must possess and present a current Class B New York State Commercial Driver's License within six months of date of appointment and maintained during length of employment.

• Good knowledge of the tools, equipment and terminology relating to the maintenance of a water distribution system;
