Job summary

Hometown Coffee & Juice in Northbrook is hiring a Cashier & Runner to greet customers, take orders, and deliver food and drinks with warmth and accuracy. You’ll work closely with baristas and kitchen staff to ensure smooth service, while maintaining cleanliness and knowledge of the menu.

Training before the Northbrook opening is offered, with hours at Glenview prior to December 2026. The role emphasizes hospitality, attention to detail, teamwork, and a willingness to assist wherever needed

About this position

Position Summary

At Hometown Coffee & Juice, our Cashiers and Runners play an essential role in creating a welcoming, efficient, and memorable customer experience. Whether you're greeting customers at the register, helping them navigate our menu, delivering orders, or keeping the café running smoothly, you'll help ensure every guest feels taken care of.

As a Cashier & Runner, you'll work closely with our baristas, expo, and kitchen teams to provide friendly, accurate, and efficient service. A successful team member brings genuine hospitality, strong attention to detail, and a willingness to jump in wherever needed in a fast-paced environment.

Our Northbrook café is scheduled to open in December 2026. Team members hired before opening will have the opportunity to begin training and work scheduled hours at our Glenview location. This allows you to get to know Hometown, build confidence in your role, and start earning hours before the Northbrook café officially opens.

What You’ll Do

Deliver a Great Customer Experience

• Welcome every customer with warm, genuine hospitality.
• Take orders accurately and efficiently while helping customers navigate our menu.
• Deliver food and beverages to customers promptly and with care.
• Ensure orders are delivered to the correct customers and tables.
• Communicate modifiers, allergies, and special requests accurately.
• Respond to customer questions and requests in a friendly, professional manner.

Maintain Speed & Accuracy

• Process payments, discounts, rewards, and other transactions according to company procedures.
• Maintain awareness of the line, dining room, and overall flow of service.
• Work closely with baristas, expo, runners, and kitchen teammates to ensure orders are prepared and delivered accurately.
• Help resolve order questions or discrepancies quickly and professionally.
• Clear and reset tables efficiently to keep the dining room ready for incoming customers.

Know the Menu

• Build strong knowledge of Hometown's food, coffee, juice, smoothie, and beverage offerings.
• Stay current on menu changes, specials, promotions, and other important information.
• Confidently answer customer questions and seek support when needed.

Maintain Cleanliness & Organization

• Keep the register, dining room, and surrounding service areas clean, organized, and stocked.
• Clear tables, remove dishes, and maintain a clean and welcoming dining environment.
• Restock supplies, utensils, napkins, and other guest-facing items throughout the shift.
• Maintain cleanliness and organization in accordance with company standards.

Support the Team

• Stay aware of the needs of the café and proactively step in wherever support is needed.
• Work collaboratively with teammates during busy periods.
• Help maintain a smooth flow of service between the counter, kitchen, and dining room.
• Bring a positive, dependable, and team-first attitude to every shift.

What You Bring

• Previous customer service or food service experience is preferred, but not required.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to multitask and remain organized in a fast-paced environment.
• Comfort handling transactions and learning POS systems.
• Willingness to learn and assist in multiple areas of the café.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to stand and move throughout the café for extended periods.
• Ability to lift and carry up to 30 pounds.
• Ability to carry food, beverages, and dishes safely throughout the café.
• Ability to work efficiently during busy service periods.

Pay: Base hourly wage: $9.25–$11 (tip credit wage), plus an estimated $8–$10 per hour in tips. Total hourly compensation is estimated at $17.25–$21 per hour, including tips. Tips are based on historical averages and may vary, with opportunities to earn more.
