Job summary

Catholic Charities is seeking a Caseworker Coach II for the Rachel’s Promise Center for Women & Children in San Diego. You will engage women and families experiencing homelessness, assess needs, connect to housing resources, and help develop individualized housing plans.

The role emphasizes direct engagement with residents, collaboration with community partners, and documentation in HMIS/CES. A background in human services and MI/Housing First approaches are valued.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Services or 2+ years homeless/case management experience required.
  • Experience providing shelter services and/or case management to women, children, and families experiencing homelessness, substance use disorders, and/or mental illness.
  • Knowledge of TI care and TI approaches to service delivery.
  • Proficiency in Motivational Interviewing, Stages of Change, Housing First and harm reduction.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Bilingual Spanish preferred; English reading/writing/speaking required.
  • Background check required; valid driver’s license with clean driving record.
  • Strong computer skills and ability to use database software.
  • Ability to multi-task, organize, and prioritize; work well with others and independently.
  • Candidates with lived experience encouraged to apply; Food Handler’s Certificate obtainable.

Responsibilities

  • Welcomes and orients new shelter guests, completes intakes, and explains program routines and services.
  • Within 48–72 hours, meet with each new resident to identify strengths and barriers.
  • Collaborate with residents to establish housing plans and goals within 120 days.
  • Provide information about resources to address housing, income, and skill development needs.
  • Offer housing navigation services and complete VI-SPDAT when appropriate.
  • Review residents’ files weekly to optimize outcomes and adjust plans.
  • Develop knowledge of county-wide resources for homelessness relief.
  • Participate in case management, trainings, and monthly program meetings.
  • Collaborate with Catholic Charities Homeless Programs and Rachel’s Women’s Center team members.
  • Foster a trauma-informed, safety-focused culture; document contacts in HMIS and CES; complete required monthly reports.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Salary

$24.00 - 25.30 per hour

Position Summary

The Caseworker Coach II serves as a vital member of the Rachel’s Promise Center for Women & Children team. The Caseworker Coach II develops a thorough understanding of available community resources and fosters collaborative relationships with colleagues both within Catholic Charities and throughout the broader community. Rachel’s Promise Center for Women & Children operates as a low-barrier, housing-focused shelter for single adult women and women with children. The Caseworker Coach II provides compassionate support and individualized services to these populations, addressing the unique challenges faced by women and families experiencing homelessness. This position involves direct engagement with women and their children, offering guidance, connecting them to essential resources, and assisting in securing stable housing as well as accessing critical community programs.

Essential Functions – Rachel’s Promise
  • Welcomes and orients new shelter guests, completes intakes with new residents, explains program routines, and reviews behavioral expectations and available services at the time of admission.
  • Within 48-72 hours of entry, meets with each new resident to identify her individual strengths and barriers interfering with her resolution of homelessness.
  • In collaboration with residents, establishes housing plans and realistic goals that are achievable within 120 days.
  • Provides information about resources appropriate to each woman’s needs to assist residents in accomplishing their goals, placing special emphasis on housing, increasing income, and skill development.
  • Provides diversion and housing navigation services for residents when that option is available, completes Vulnerability Index-Service Prioritization and Decision Assistance Tool (VI-SPDAT) when appropriate.
  • Reviews each resident’s file at least weekly to determine what is working well and where adjustments are needed to improve resident outcomes.
  • Develops a comprehensive base of knowledge of county-wide resources that address the needs of people experiencing homelessness, while maintaining up-to-date knowledge about community resources.
  • Participates in case management, training, conferences, and program monthly meetings as directed.
  • Works collaboratively with coworkers within Catholic Charities Homeless Programs, including Rachel’s Women’s Center behavioral health team members.
  • Establishes and nurtures collaborative relationships with colleagues from other agencies providing similar or complementary services.
  • Fosters a trauma-informed, safety-focused culture within Rachel’s Promise and all Homeless Services programs.
  • Documents all contacts with residents in files, Clarity HMIS and CES (Coordinated Entry System for housing placement).
  • Completes and submits all required monthly reports and assigned paperwork as needed in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Services, social or behavioral sciences or related field or minimum two years of equivalent experience in homelessness, case management/navigation experience, as well as experience providing shelter services and/or case management to women, children, and families experiencing homelessness, substance use disorders, and/or mental illness required.
  • A positive, can-do attitude and willingness to learn and grow.
  • Demonstrated comprehension of trauma-informed care and experience applying TI approaches to service delivery.
  • Solid demonstrated working knowledge of Motivational Interviewing, Stages of Change, Housing First and harm reduction approaches to service delivery.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Bilingual Spanish speaking is preferred but not required. Must be able to read, write and speak English.
  • Successful completion of background check.
  • Valid Driver’s License and a clean driving record.
  • Strong computer skills and ability to become proficient with database software.
  • Ability to multi-task, organize, and prioritize.
  • Ability to work effectively with others and independently.
