Qualifications

CLASSIFICATION TITLE: Case Specialist SALARY: $41,328.19 - $53,454.55 DEPARTMENT: Macomb Community Action Opening Date: 09/22/2026 Closing Date: 10/06/2026 12:00 a.m. FLSA Status: Non-exempt - overtime pursuant to collective bargaining agreement and/or Human Resources policy Employment Relationship: Just cause subject to probationary period.

GENERAL SUMMARY

Under direction, provides coordination of services for clients by conducting intake assessments and interviewing clients for program eligibility. Assists with the following programs: emergency services, money management and financial literacy, weatherization assistance, transportation, food programs, housing stability and homelessness assistance programs, and utility assistance programs.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Processes applications for assistance and verify documents necessary for multiple programs. Provides clients with case management and follow-up to ensure self-sufficiency. Reviews and evaluates client circumstances and documentation. Advocates on behalf of low-income individuals and families, to community organizations, service providers and institutions. Corresponds with apartment complexes, management companies, private property owners, mortgage companies, utility companies, Department of Health and Human Services, other community partner agencies, and municipalities. May conduct community outreach for programs and participate in meetings as assigned. Maintains accurate electronic and/or paper files by processing applications, keeps case history files current and responds to client inquiries and complaints. Answers and records telephone information pertaining to crisis interventions, pre-screening of customer information, customer follow up and the completion of forms. Maintains knowledge of organizations that provide community services; seeks referral information using directories and resource guides. Operates automobile while performing assigned duties. Performs related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required Education and Experience: Associate’s degree from an accredited college or university in Human Services, Social Work, Business or a related field. One (1) year of experience working in human services with populations experiencing poverty.

Preferred Education and Experience: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Human Services, Social Work, Business or a related field.

Required Licenses or Certifications: Possession of a valid Michigan driver’s license and operable, insured automobile for authorized travel.

Knowledge of: Community resources, human service agencies, programs and services available for veterans and other disadvantaged populations including homeless individuals. Various software and computer skills: Windows, Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Modern office procedures, methods and computer equipment. Skill in: Organizational and initiative skills, including the ability to multi-task and manage time wisely. Interpersonal skills necessary to develop and maintain effective and appropriate working relationships. Performing a variety of duties, often changing from one task to another of a different nature. Performing basic mathematical functions such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentages, and ratios. Ability to: Meet schedules and deadlines of the workload. Understand and carry out oral and written directions. Work independently and meet deadlines with minimal supervision. Maintain the confidentiality of information and professional boundaries. Effectively speak, write and understand the English language.
