The Role

Under general direction, the Substance Use Counselor is an integral member of the clinical team, serving as the primary counselor for a caseload of individuals with substance use disorders. The counselor will manage cases, provide individual and group counseling, conduct assessments, coordinate services, offer psychoeducation, make referrals, and maintain all required documentation. This work supports the mission and goals of Samaritan Daytop Village.

Responsibilities

What You Will Do

  • Develop treatment plans in collaboration with the Program Director or Clinical Supervisor, reflecting an understanding of the patient's physical, medical, cognitive, and psychosocial needs and specific diagnoses.
  • Use a strengths-based and trauma-informed approach to work collaboratively with patients and treatment team members to support recovery.
  • Provide clinical consultation to referral sources, mentors, family members, and others to support patient recovery.
  • Engage patients in decision-making and help them understand the benefits of assessments and appropriate levels of care.
  • Review referral information upon patient assignment and coordinate services and scheduling of patient interviews.
  • Make referrals to suitable programs and agencies based on assessments to meet patient needs.
  • Assist patients with scheduling admissions or first appointments at referred programs or facilities.
  • Monitor patient engagement with treatment providers and address barriers to recovery.
Qualifications

Who You Will Be

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • OASAS CASAC-T or CASAC Certification
  • 1-2 years of experience working with clients with Substance Use Disorder, preferably within an Opioid Treatment Program
  • Knowledge of Trauma-Informed Care and organizational treatments
  • Experience with co-occurring disorders
  • Understanding of laws regarding personnel and client confidentiality
