Overview

The Role

Under general direction, the Substance Use Counselor is an integral member of the clinical team, serving as the primary counselor to a caseload of patients with substance use disorder. The counselor manages patient caseloads, provides individual and group counseling, conducts assessments, coordinates services, offers psychoeducation, makes referrals, and maintains documentation. This work supports the mission and goals of Samaritan Daytop Village.

Responsibilities

  • Develop treatment plans in collaboration with the Program Director or Clinical Supervisor, considering patients' physical, medical, cognitive, and psychosocial needs.
  • Use a strengths-based and trauma-informed approach to collaborate with patients and treatment team members to support recovery.
  • Provide clinical consultation to referral sources, mentors, family members, and others to support patient recovery.
  • Engage patients in decision-making and help them understand assessment benefits and appropriate care levels.
  • Review referral information and coordinate with referral sources for patient interviews and service scheduling.
  • Make referrals to suitable programs and agencies based on assessments to meet patient needs.
  • Assist patients in scheduling admissions or appointments at referred programs or facilities.
  • Monitor patient engagement with treatment providers and address barriers to treatment and recovery.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent.
  • OASAS CASAC-T or CASAC Certification.
  • 1-2 years of related experience working with clients with Substance Use Disorder, preferably in an Opioid Treatment Program.
  • Knowledge of Trauma-Informed Care and organizational treatment approaches.
  • Experience working with persons with co-occurring disorders.
  • Understanding of laws regarding personnel and client confidentiality.
