Job summary

Temporary Shelter Inc. seeks a graveyard shift staff member to assist in coordinating services for homeless adults, including client intake, safety, and housing support. Responsibilities include data entry in HMIS, daily coordination with vendors, and supervising volunteers.

Qualifications

  • Drug and alcohol counseling or case management experience (RADT, CCAPP or equivalent).
  • High School diploma or GED; some college preferred.
  • 6–12 months of experience working with homeless clients.
  • Knowledge of homeless resources to assist in housing and related issues.
  • Commitment to housing and homelessness issues is essential.
  • Strong written and verbal communication; meet deadlines and work independently.
  • Ability to work flexible schedules, including evenings and/or weekends.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office; excellent database skills.
  • Ethical interactions with all constituents; high integrity.
  • Ability to maintain composure and exercise tact under stress.
  • Ability to build and maintain effective relationships with clients and partners.
  • Ability to follow policies and adapt to shelter procedures; driving record within acceptable limits.

Responsibilities

  • Perform intakes and orientation for new shelter clients.
  • Explain shelter rules and procedures to clients.
  • Input client data into HMIS/database and maintain records.
  • Assist clients with housing options and access to services.
  • Organize meal distribution and cleanup.
  • Conduct regular inspections and headcounts.
  • Answer phones and relay messages as needed.
  • Maintain supplies (linens, clothing, cleaning, personal care).
  • Assist with laundering of linens and clothing.
  • Distribute towels, blankets, hygiene products, etc.
  • Conduct weekly tours with supervisor to identify repairs.
  • Report incidents immediately and escalate when needed.
  • Serve as point person for volunteers.
  • Respond to emergencies (accidents, fire, police).
  • Enforce rules per internal policies; resolve problems.
  • Respond to client needs and coordinate with team.
  • Attend trainings and meetings as assigned.
  • Complete special projects as requested by supervisor.
  • Conduct meetings onsite for guests (12-step style if applicable).
  • Provide ongoing SUD supportive services per case management.

Job description

Description

Assist in coordination of Temporary Shelter Inc. services to our clients (homeless adults – some of whom have substance abuse problems and/or mental illness) to regain their self-sufficiency. This position is responsible for assuring the security and safety of clients and property/building during each assigned graveyard shift. This position will also work with vendors and community support services to support Temporary Shelter’s needs and the needs of our clients.

JOB DUTIES (duties may be added as needed)
  1. 1. Perform intakes of new shelter clients as well as an orientation of the shelter program.
  2. 2. Explain all rules and procedures to clients.
  3. 3. Input new client data into local database and HMIS.
  4. 4. Assist clients with finding housing and / or services.
  5. 5. Organize meal distribution and clean-up.
  6. 6. Conduct regular inspections and headcounts.
  7. 7. Answer phones and take messages as needed
  8. 8. Maintain adequate, labeled supplies of clean linens, clothing, cleaning supplies, and personal care products for the facility.
  9. 9. Assist with laundering of linens and clothing.
  10. 10. Distribute towels, blankets, hygiene products, etc.
  11. 11. Conduct regular walk-through tours with Temporary Shelter Supervisor to identify needed repairs and maintenance.
  12. 12. Report incidents immediately.
  13. 13. Serve as point person for volunteers.
  14. 14. Respond to emergency situations, e.g., accidents, fire, police, etc.
  15. 15. Enforce rules according to internal policies.
  16. 16. Manage any concerns that arise, acting appropriately to resolve problems.
  17. 17. Respond to the needs of clients.
  18. 18. Attend trainings and meetings as assigned.
  19. 19. Complete special projects as requested by Temporary Shelter Supervisor.
  20. 20. Conduct weekly NA meetings onsite for current guests
  21. 21. Ongoing SUD supportive services according to case management and support
  22. 22. Knowledge of 12 core functions
  23. 23. Able to help clients maintain sobriety
  24. 24. Create individual care plans and maintain client documentation in SOAP note form
Requirements
  1. 1. Drug and alcohol counseling or case management experience RADT, CCAPP or other certified board
  2. 2. High School diploma or GED. Some college preferred.
  3. 3. 6 months - 1 year of experience in working with homeless people.
  4. 4. Knowledge of homeless resources to assist in housing and other related issues.
  5. 5. Committed to housing and homeless issues is essential.
  6. 6. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing including the ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions in an independent manner, able to meet deadlines and complete all work in a timely manner (within required deadlines).
  7. 7. Ability to work flexible schedules, including evenings and/or weekends if needed.
  8. 8. Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, etc.); Excellent database skills
  9. 9. Proven ability to conduct all interactions with all constituents in a highly ethical manner demonstrating high level of integrity.
  10. 10. Demonstrated ability to exercise appropriate judgment with tact and diplomacy both under normal and stressful situations. Must be able to maintain appropriate composure when faced with escalated situations.
  11. 11. Ability to establish and maintain successful and effective relationships Temporary Shelter constituents. Includes ability to successfully work collaboratively and or independently.
  12. 12. Demonstrated solutions based approach to problem solving in an effective, efficient and timely manner. Ability to be creative and show initiative.
  13. 13. Ability to follow policies and organize work to Temporary Shelter policies, procedures and best practices which include any related federal, state, or local agency requirement.
  14. 14. Maintain an acceptable driving record (in accordance with our insurance carrier, less than 2 DMV points on driving record).
