Case Manager / Tax Resolution Specialist
The W Tax Group
Southfield, Michigan · Full-Time · On-site / Hybrid
Who We Are
Since 2014, The W Tax Group has helped individuals and business owners across the country get out from under IRS and state tax problems. From our headquarters in Southfield, Michigan, we handle everything from unfiled returns and wage garnishments to bank levies, payroll tax liabilities, and Offers in Compromise, and we see each case through from initial investigation to final resolution.
Our clients come to us at some of the most stressful moments of their financial lives. We are looking for someone who knows the tax code, knows how the IRS actually works, and genuinely wants to be the person who gets them to the other side.
The Role
As a Case Manager / Tax Resolution Specialist, you will own a portfolio of active resolution cases. You will be the client's primary point of contact, the person who reads the notices, interprets the transcripts, prepares the filings, and keeps every file moving toward a resolution. This is a hands-on technical role, not a call-center position. You will apply real tax knowledge every day and work directly alongside our attorneys, settlement officers, and sales team.
We are especially interested in candidates with a CPA or Enrolled Agent (EA) credential, or solid hands-on experience in tax preparation and IRS/state tax resolution.
What You'll Do
Drive cases to resolution
- Manage a caseload of contracted tax resolution clients from engagement through final resolution, owning file progress, deadlines, and next steps.
- Carry out the resolution strategy for each client, including installment agreements, Currently Not Collectible status, Offers in Compromise, penalty abatement, and state-level resolutions.
- Assign and oversee tasks for support staff and hold the file accountable to a timeline.
Apply your technical expertise
- Review and interpret IRS and state tax authority notices, account transcripts, and wage and income records to determine exactly what action is required and when.
- Prepare IRS and state forms and representation documents, such as Forms 2848, 433-A, 433-F, 433-B, 9465, and 843, along with the supporting financial documentation needed to resolve each matter.
- Identify unfiled return obligations and coordinate preparation and filing of federal and state returns for individuals and business entities.
- Stay current on federal and state tax law, collection procedures, and IRS policy changes that affect our clients.
Be the client's advocate and trusted voice
- Serve as the single point of contact for your clients by phone, text, email, and mail.
- Translate complex notices and account activity into clear, honest status updates.
- Gather financial information and documentation from clients and keep them engaged and on track.
Elevate the team
- Act as a technical resource and mentor for our sales staff on resolution options, likely outcomes, pricing considerations, and documentation requirements.
- Maintain accurate, thorough case notes and profile data in our case management system.
What We're Looking For
Strongly Preferred
- CPA or Enrolled Agent (EA) credential , with authority to represent taxpayers before the IRS.
- Experience in IRS and/or state tax resolution: installment agreements, CNC, Offers in Compromise, penalty abatement, levy and lien releases, or audit and examination work.
- Experience preparing individual and business tax returns (Forms 1040, 1120-S, 1065, 1120, 941, 940, and state equivalents).
- Comfort reading IRS account transcripts and working with the IRS Practitioner Priority Service.
Required
- High school diploma or GED.
- Excellent phone presence and written communication skills; you can explain technical tax issues in plain language.
- An assertive, confident, and personable approach with clients, the IRS, and teammates.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage a high-volume caseload independently while collaborating with the team.
- Proficiency with Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Drive) and comfort learning case management and tax software.
- High ethical standards, discretion with sensitive financial information, and a professional demeanor.
Candidates without a CPA or EA credential who bring meaningful tax preparation or resolution experience are encouraged to apply. Willingness to pursue the EA credential is a plus.
