Job summary

Fincantieri Marine Group (FMG) in Wisconsin is seeking a carpenter to operate carpentry equipment to build interior and exterior ship components, read blueprints, measure, cut, and assemble materials to support ship construction, repair, and dock operations.

You will follow instructions under supervision, ensure safety and quality, work at heights and in confined spaces, and adapt to varying weather in a waterfront environment.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 1 year experience in carpentry or shipyard work.
  • Experience reading blueprints and working with wood materials.
  • Ability to work at heights and in confined spaces; strong safety focus.

Responsibilities

  • Follow instructions under supervision and read blueprints to determine work requirements.
  • Measure, mark, cut, and install wood components for ship structures.
  • Operate carpentry tools and assist with docking/undocking vessels.
  • Diagnose issues and ensure proper storage and handling of tools.
  • Maintain safety, quality, and environmental policies; work with attendance in waterfront setting.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Position Summary

This position is responsible for operating carpentry equipment to assist in building parts of interior and exterior of ships, and shipyard buildings at our vast, 63-acre facility. The role involves reading blueprints, measuring and cutting materials, assembling components, and operating carpentry tools and equipment to support ship construction, repair, and dock operations.

Essential Functions
  • Follow instructions under intermittent supervision and review blueprints/specifications to determine work requirements.
  • Measure, mark, cut, and install wood components for ship and building structures.
  • Operate carpentry tools/equipment and assist with docking and undocking vessels.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot equipment issues and ensure proper storage and handling of all tools.
  • Perform miscellaneous tasks as needed while adhering to all safety, quality, and environmental policies.
  • Maintain reliable attendance and work energetically in a waterfront environment while following organizational procedures.
  • Other duties and overtime as assigned.
Requirements
Required Skills
  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must be a U.S. Person.
  • Must be able to work at heights.
  • Must be able to work in confined and enclosed spaces.
  • Must be able to work in all weather conditions. (cold, hot, rain, snow, etc.)
  • Must have knowledge of construction materials/methods and basic blueprint reading.
  • Must be a self-starter capable of working independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to work in fast-paced environments.
  • Must have basic organizational, time management, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must have ability to maintain confidentiality and a professional demeanor.
  • Must adhere to ISO and OSHA policies established by FMG and have high values for safety awareness.
Education and Experience
  • Minimum 1 year experience, 3+ years of experience preferred.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment

Physical Demands and Work Environment

While performing job duties, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand or walk; use hands and arms to grasp, handle, manipulate, or feel objects and controls; stoop, bend, kneel, and crouch; and speak or hear. The employee may lift and/or move up to 35lbs regularly and up to 50lbs occasionally. Work is performed both inside and outside in varying environmental conditions, including heat, cold, wet, humid, dry, and arid climates. The employee may also be required to work in confined spaces and at varying heights. Frequent use of PPE is required to minimize noise exposure, moving machinery, weather elements, and other potential hazards, including the risk of injury.
