Job summary

Eastern Shipbuilding Group, Inc. is seeking a carpentry/wood structures worker for marine vessel construction and repair. Responsibilities include fabricating, assembling, installing, and repairing wood components on ships in a busy shipyard.

Responsibilities

• Regular attendance and ability to work flexible hours including overtime, weekends, and holidays.
• Assist in repair of structural woodwork and replacement of defective parts with hand and power tools.
• Assist in construction of floors, doors, and partitions using woodworking machines and tools.
• Layout and align materials per specifications and measure to ensure conformance.
• Assist in installing ladders, handrails, sound dampening and ballast materials.
• Rig and signal cranes to move material safely to locations.

POSITION SUMMARY

Cut, fabricate, assemble, install, and/or repair a variety of wood structures and furnishings in marine vessels.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES MAY INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING

• Regular attendance at work and the ability to work flexible hours, including overtime, weekends and holidays.
• Comply with company, Federal, State, and local safety, ethics, and environmental rules, regulations and policies while performing duties.
• Assist in the repair of structural woodwork and replacement of defective parts and equipment using hand and power tools.
• Assist in the construction of floors, doors, and partitions, using woodworking machines, hand tools, and power tools.
• Assist in the layout and alignment of material in accordance with specifications.
• Measure and cut materials to determine conformance to specifications.
• Assist in the installation of permanent and temporary ladders and handrails.
• Assist in the installation of sound dampening and ballasting materials.
• Using approved material, prepare and place blocking material for vessel blocking.
• Rig and flag cranes using hand signals to move material safely to desired locations.
• Accountable for completion of daily work assignments.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

REQUIREMENTS

Education/Experience: High school diploma or GED equivalence plus one or more years carpentry experience desired.

An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Knowledge of materials, methods, and the appropriate tools to construct marine vessels.

Requires knowledge of ship terminology, safety, and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations.

SKILLS

• Ability to read and comprehend written, verbal, or diagram form.
• Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, verbal, or diagram form.
• Ability to read and understand blueprints.
• Knowledge of safe operation and use of hand and power tools.
• Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure.
• Ability to read a tape measure.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to communicate. The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms. This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, and climbing throughout the workday.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

The employee must be physically and medically qualified to wear all required personal protective equipment, as prescribed under Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards.

The employee must be able to work above ground at heights of a minimum of 50 feet aloft and/or working from scaffolding and/or man-lifts while working with machinery; in confined spaces and withstand extreme heat and cold in an outside climate or confined space.
