Job summary

The University of South Carolina is hiring a skilled Carpenter/Locksmith to perform journeyman-level carpentry maintenance, repairs, and minor installations across campus facilities. You will service locks, hardware, doors, and related security systems, ensuring safety and compliance with codes while supporting students, staff, and campus operations.

This role requires the ability to read plans, work independently, supervise seasonal staff, and participate in after-hours on-call rotations.

Qualifications

• 5 years of journeyman level carpentry experience or completion of carpenter apprenticeship program with 2 years of experience.
• Knowledge of installing and repairing door closers, locks, hinges, sweeps and weather stripping.
• Knowledge of wood and steel stud framing, drywall installation and repairs, drywall finishing.

Responsibilities

• Install, maintain and repair building locks including cylindrical, unit, mortise, rim and reload cylinders.
• Replace and repair panic hardware, door closers, ADA openers and locks on desks and cabinets.
• Inspect facilities, perform preventive maintenance and repairs on walls, ceilings, doors and hardware.
• Perform new installations including framing, drywall, windows and flooring.
• Supervise temporary staff performing minor skilled work.
• Serve in an after-hours On-Call rotation.

We Have the Job for You! The Carpenter/Locksmith performs journeyman-level carpentry maintenance, repairs, and minor installations. This position services and installs commercial carpentry components, hardware, flooring, ceiling systems, and electronic locking systems. The incumbent diagnoses and troubleshoots problems, performs appropriate repairs, and applies thorough knowledge of applicable codes, industry work practices, and safety standards. This position is designated as essential during inclement or hazardous weather and other emergencies.

Primary Duties Include:

• Perform work requiring expertise in the installation, maintenance, and repair of building locks, including cylindrical, unit, mortise, rim, and reload cylinders.
• Replace and repair panic hardware, door closers, ADA openers, and locks on desks, file cabinets, display cases, and similar containers.
• Inspect facilities, systems, and components to ensure safety, identify necessary repairs, and support an ongoing preventive maintenance program. Perform maintenance on drywall, block walls, cabinets, steel doors and frames, windows, hardware, and ceilings.
• Perform new installations, including metal stud framing, drywall and finishing, windows, doors, hardware, ceilings, and flooring.
• Supervise temporary and seasonal staff performing minor skilled work.
• Will serve in an after hours On-Call rotation.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

• Knowledge of wood and steel stud framing, drywall installation and repairs, drywall finishing, block walls, drop ceilings, metal doors and frames.
• Knowledge of installing and repairing door closers, locks, hinges, sweeps and weather stripping.
• Prepping, installing and finish finishing tile work.
• Knowledge of applicable codes, industry standards and job site safety.
• Through knowledge of tools, equipment and materials used in general building maintenance and construction trades.
• Knowledge of techniques, methods, and practices of designated trades.
• Skill in use of tools and equipment.
• Ability to read, understand and interpret plans and specifications.
• Ability to work independently and to direct work for subordinates.

Preferred Qualifications
