Job description

A Carpenter Foreman performs journeyman-level work in rough and finish carpentry, altering and constructing buildings, cabinets, specialty wood items, and general remodeling. The Carpenter Foreman supervisesandcoordinates the work of a (1) crew of workers. Additionally, Carpenter Foremen are responsible for seeing the workers under them do their job skillfully and efficiently and that assigned work progresses on schedule.

Key responsibilities:

  • Manage a job in its entirety from start to finish.
  • Review the project plan and estimate time, material, equipment, and supplies needed.
  • Review and complete the ‘Job Folder’ checklist.
  • Direct and assign individuals to job tasks.
  • Inspect work areas to ensure the job is being completed as specified.
  • Ensure safety measures and procedures are implemented and followed.
  • Ensure work areas are adequately maintained.
  • Ensure customer property is protected and safeguarded from damage.
  • Evaluate staff performance and assist the operations manager in performance reviews.
  • Train and develop staff at the job site.
  • Ensure staff compliance with company policy/employee guidelines.
  • Review and confirm staff time sheets.
  • Monitor inventory and request supplies, materials, and equipment.
  • Maintain and manage company vehicles and their content.

Education and Training

To become a Carpenter Foreman, one must demonstrate proficiency as a Carpenter and as an artisan, illustrate an above-average knowledge of all facets of a particular trade, and consistently do noticeably good work. A Carpenter Foreman should have the same basic aptitude and interests as those working in the craft being supervised, plus additional reading, writing, and math skills. The ability to motivate workers and communicate with them and superiors is essential. A Carpenter Foreman must often lead by example. Typically, a Carpenter Foreman has a minimum of 5+ years in the trade.

In an entry-level/first-line management position, a Carpenter Foreman who exhibits solid rapport and communicates with their workers and superiors leads by example, has outstanding skills and trade knowledge, gets the job done correctly and on schedule, and works to improve their management skills.
