Job Title: Carpenter Reports To: Supervisor of General Maintenance Classification: Auxiliary (Skilled Labor) Wage/Hour Status: Non-exempt Days: 250 Salary: See Compensation Plan for Auxiliary Pay Plan, Pay Grade 307 Contract: None Date Revised: 11/15/2023 Primary Purpose: Responsible for maintaining District buildings, installing and repairing structures, fixtures, furniture and other items using different types of materials including wood and steel. Qualifications/Skills: Education/Certification

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Prefer trade school certification.

Special Knowledge/Skills

  • Bilingual (English & Spanish) a plus.
  • Ability to work well with peers and managers in a crew environment.
  • Ability to perform extensive physical and repetitive activities, including but not limited to pushing, pulling, bending, reaching, carrying and regular lifting of 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work in close quarters & heights of approximately 30 or more feet.
  • Should have good math skills.
  • Detail oriented.
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills.
  • Capable of making independent, on the spot, “safe to operate” decisions regarding safety of students, staff and public occupants.
  • Must have knowledge of multiple hand and power tools.

Experience

  • Three (3) years of experience preferred.

Major Duties and

Responsibilities:
Maintenance and Repair:

  • Repair or install drywall, acoustical ceilings, vinyl floors, millwork and other architectural or structural construction, including but not limited to painting, hardware and minor plumbing in relation to millwork.
  • Weld, fabricate, repair, maintain, and/or replace, signage, make minor repairs in the areas as it relates to bleachers, basketball goals, backboards, lockers, playground equipment, folding doors, gutters, fencing, overhead canopies, and miscellaneous athletic equipment.
  • Perform Preventive Maintenance on buildings and equipment.
  • Act as Project Lead Person when assigned.
  • The ability to acquire needed materials based on individual projects.
  • Comply with policies established by federal and state law, State Board of Education rule and local board policy.
  • Review drawings from architect and engineers and make recommendations.
  • Attend continuing education training to be up to date on code and compliance and newer technology as needed.
  • Work with building principals, staff and supervisors to complete projects.
  • Communicate actual or potential problems, using established protocols to appropriate stakeholders.
  • Must be able to provide clear direction, information and assistance to all associates, guests and visitors.
  • Maintain compliance and records as required by law and code.

Safety:

  • Operate tools and equipment according to established safety procedures.
  • Ensure that equipment is in safe operating condition.
  • Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties, including lifting, climbing, etc.
  • Correct any unsafe conditions in the work area and report any conditions that are not correctable to the Department Manager and Director of Facilities Services immediately.
  • Perform preventative maintenance on tools and equipment.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area and van.

Other:

  • Adhere to all Federal, State and Municipal laws, regulations or codes and local board and departmental policies.
  • Complete daily man-hour logs and other required documentation.
  • Perform all other duties as required.

Supervisory

Responsibilities:
None Equipment Used: Ladder, small hand tools (screwdrivers, wrenches, hammers, sockets, pliers, crimpers, wire cutters, etc.), light van, seat belts, shoulder harnesses, cellular phone, and power tools. Working Conditions: Mental Demands:

  • Maintain emotional control under stress.
  • Work with frequent interruptions.
  • This position requires regular in-person interaction with the public.

Physical Demands:

  • Continual standing, walking, pushing, and pulling.
  • Sitting, standing, walking up to 5 miles daily, climbing (stairs, ladder, scaffold, or ramps), balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive hand motions, hearing, speaking clearly and visual acuity.
  • Repetitive hand motions.
  • Working hours may be modified at the discretion of the Manager. Occasionally some after hours and weekend work may be scheduled to meet district requirements.

Environmental Factors:

  • Exposure to repeated noise from fire horns.
  • Work for continuous or extended periods exposed to but not limited to the sun, heat, cold, poor weather conditions and/or mechanical rooms with equipment noise.
