Memphis-Shelby County Schools is seeking a skilled carpenter to perform carpentry work in support of district facilities. The role involves manual labor, maintaining tools, completing work orders promptly, and recording labor hours with accuracy.

Under general supervision, you will read blueprints, estimate materials, perform structural and finish repairs, install walls, ceilings, doors, and millwork, and assist in supervising helpers.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED required.
  • Four years of related experience in maintenance or carpentry.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and drawings.
  • Valid driver''s license required.
  • Ability to supervise helpers, laborers, and contractors.
  • Demonstrates safety and quality standards.

Responsibilities

  • Perform skilled carpentry work to support maintenance of District facilities.
  • Identify and inspect maintenance and repair needs; propose efficient methods to supervisor.
  • Read and interpret blueprints; assist in estimating materials and labor requirements.
  • Perform structural and finish repairs on buildings.
  • Install walls, ceilings, millwork, roofing systems, and doors/windows; install equipment.
  • Prepare specifications for locking mechanisms; maintain records.
  • Build/repair furnishings, fixtures, and equipment including playground equipment, fencing, bleachers.
  • Supervise helpers, laborers, and contractors as assigned.
  • Maintain trucks and equipment; perform preventive maintenance.
  • Operate trucks and power tools as necessary.
  • Document labor hours and materials; attend trainings.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

The position is responsible for performing manual labor, maintaining equipment and tools, completing work orders in a timely manner with minimal service disruption, and maintaining accurate work records. The position works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences.

  • Performs skilled carpentry work to support the maintenance of District facilities. 2.Identifies and inspects maintenance and repair needs and safety concerns throughout District facilities; evaluates and makes recommendations to supervisor for the most efficient methods of accomplishing repairs.
  • Reads and interprets blueprints and other drawings; assists in estimating and planning project materials, costs and labor requirements.
  • Performs structural and finish repairs on buildings.
  • Installs and/or assists in the installation of walls and ceiling systems, millwork, roofing systems and floor coverings, doors and windows; installs equipment in windows or walls.
  • May prepare specifications for, order, install and maintain locking mechanisms on doors and windows, and maintain master key controls/records.
  • Builds, alters, repairs, modifies and/or installs furnishings, fixtures and equipment, including but not limited to playground equipment, picnic tables, fencing, bleachers, concrete or steel structures.
  • Assists in supervising the work of helpers, laborers and/or contractors as assigned.
  • Assists in maintaining assigned trucks and equipment; performs cleaning, preventive maintenance and simple repair work as required.
  • May drive and operate trucks and other vehicles; operates various hand and power tools as necessary to accomplish tasks.
  • Performs other maintenance and repair duties as designated by supervisor.
  • Performs duties in accordance with all department policies, procedures, and standards of quality and safety.
  • Documents labor hours and materials used on assigned tasks.
  • Attends training and meetings as required to exchange information and to enhance job knowledge and skills.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or directed.

Requires High School diploma or GED and four (4) years of related experience and requires valid Drivers License.

This position will work in MSCS Zone 2 and Zone 4.
