This is the full journey level class within the Carpenter series. Employees within this class perform the full range of duties as assigned. Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise, and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit.
Receives general supervision and work assignments from higher level staff.

A civil service examination will be conducted in accordance with the Civil Service Rules of the city of Las Vegas. The examination for this recruitment will be a written examination, weighted 100%, and will be used to place candidates on the eligible list.
You must score 70% or higher on the examination to be placed on the eligible list. The eligible list will remain in effect for a period of 6 months from the date of certification and may be extended for a period of up to 2 years.
Final candidate selection will include list placement and may include hiring interview (if applicable). Any individual offered employment will be required to pass a pre-employment drug test, complete background check, and may be required to demonstrate the ability to perform the physical requirements of the job. Some positions may require preliminary background checks. The purpose of this recruitment is to establish an eligible list for current and/ or future openings which may include part-time or full-time positions.
Two years of increasingly responsible journey-level carpentry experience.
Equivalent to graduation from high school. Additional specialized training in carpentry or a related field.
Possession of valid, appropriate driver's license on the date of application, and maintenance thereafter. Within 15 days of initial hire, provide documentation of completion within the last five years of an OSHA-10 course in construction industry safety and health hazard recognition and prevention, developed by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration of the U.S. Department of Labor. Completion card must be continuously maintained while employed in this classification.
Possession of a Certified Playground Safety Inspector certification from the National Recreation and Parks Association within six months of the date of appointment, and maintenance thereafter.
Basic principles, procedures and terminology used in the carpentry trade. Materials and equipment used in the carpentry trades. Occupational hazards and standard safety practices. Methods and procedures in building construction repair and remodeling. Blueprints, plans and layout work.
Reading and interpreting plans and blueprints. Repairing or replacing damaged windows, drywall, tiles, roofing, playground equipment and other related carpentry maintenance tasks. Performing layout work. Correctly using and applying a variety of carpentry skills. Working at heights on ladders, scaffolding and electric lifts. Understanding and following oral and written instructions. Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Communicating clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Maintaining mental capacity which allows for effective interaction and communication with others. Working independently and without direct supervision.
