Job summary

Conroe Independent School District is seeking a skilled carpenter to support school construction and maintenance projects on-site. You will plan layouts, select materials, fabricate and install doors, windows, floors, and fixtures in a school environment.

Responsibilities include estimating time and materials, performing preventive maintenance, following safety procedures, responding to emergencies, and coordinating with principals and supervisors to complete projects.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED is required.
  • Valid Texas driver’s license.
  • Knowledge of carpentry materials and methods.
  • Ability to read blueprints and diagrams.
  • Ability to measure and perform mathematical calculations.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to work independently.

Responsibilities

  • Perform preventive maintenance and operate tools safely.

Job description

DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Plan and complete construction from initial layout to assembly using oral instructions, plans, specifications, blueprints, and work orders.
  • Select material and hardware and make time and materials estimates.
  • Fabricate, repair, and replace doors, windows, flooring, ceiling materials, glass, building hardware, screens, etc.
  • Construct and repair outdoor equipment including fences, gates, bleachers, etc.
  • Detect needed repairs on building, ground, and equipment by following established inspection procedures.
  • Replace and repair cabinets, fixtures, and woodwork, etc.
  • Assist with the installation and moving of portable buildings, including constructing steps, installing underpinning, etc.
  • Receive and complete work orders.
  • Maintain accurate records on material and labor used.
  • Maintain inventory of district-owned tools, equipment, and materials.
  • Inspect jobs upon completion and ensure areas are clean and remove scraps and lumber as needed.
  • Work with building principals and supervisors to complete projects.
  • Respond to emergency calls as needed.
  • Correct unsafe conditions in work area and report any conditions that are not correctable to supervisor immediately.
  • Help keep shop, equipment, and tools in safe operating condition.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on tools and equipment.
  • Operate tools and equipment according to established safety procedures.
  • Ensure that equipment is in safe operating condition.
  • Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties, including lifting, climbing, etc.
  • Respond to emergency calls as needed and be on-call/stand-by as assigned by supervisor.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
EXPERIENCE:
  • Minimum three to five years commercial and residential construction
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Certification:
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Valid Texas driving license
Special Knowledge/Skills:
  • Knowledge of equipment, materials, methods, practices, and tools used in carpentry
  • Ability to use hand and power tools
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instruction
  • Ability to read blueprints and diagrams
  • Ability to measure and perform mathematical computations
  • Ability to work independently

Equipment Used: Power saw, planer, drill press, sander band saw, table saw, radial arm saw, nail gun, air compressor, other power equipment, measuring devices, and light truck or van.

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors: Continual walking, standing, climbing, heavy lifting, and carrying, stooping, bending, kneeling, and reaching. Ability to operate hand and power tools and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Work outside and inside; on slippery or uneven walking surfaces, ladders, and scaffolding; and around machinery with moving parts. Exposure to hot and cold temperatures, excessive noises, fumes, gas lines, and toxic chemicals. Frequent district wide travel.

SALARY:

PAY GRADE: AUX - 7 - Minimum hourly rate - $24.50
