Overview
The Career Services Specialist series develops and implements career center activities within the University and with employer partners. Assists with overall planning and operational activities of the program. Incumbent assists students, alumni, and community members in exploring and pursuing meaningful careers over a lifetime. Regularly accomplished through advising students on various aspects of entering the world of work through classroom presentations, content creation, and 1:1 appointments. Additionally, incumbents aid clients in developing, evaluating, and/or implementing employment plans and help students, faculty, and employers to connect. The Career Services Specialist II reports to an Assistant Director within the Career Design Center and may train, guide, and supervise student and/or part-time employees.

Responsibilities

  • Provides career development to students by serving as a liaison for specific college/academic departments/industry.
  • Creates, edits, and updates career planning and development materials for presentations, Canvas, and the website.
  • Coaches and prepares students and alumni in finding suitable employment by developing job-search and effective presentation skill development and practice.
  • Assists in resume writing, interviewing, networking, social media strategy, salary negotiation, career exploration, career planning, career search strategies, individual assessment, career advising and/or graduate school applications.
  • Researches current social, economic, and employment trends; incorporating into one-on-one coaching appointments and presentations.
  • Benchmarks with colleagues through conference attendance and active association memberships regarding current and effective employment trends, strategies, and best practices.
  • Promotes career design through creating and delivering presentations to students, alumni and employers on following areas: job markets, career search strategies, resume/application procedures, networking, and interviewing.
  • Identifies new resources that will benefit students and employers.
  • Develops relationships with the campus community, employers, faculty, department heads, deans, student groups, academic advisors, and other key constituent groups.
  • Coordinates small to large events/projects, which may include career fairs, on-campus interviews, networking opportunities, etc.
  • Solicits funding from alumni, employers, and assigned colleges for collaborative programming.
  • Identifies new employers to the state/region and reaches out via email, phone, and/or in-person for the purpose of obtaining job postings and campus recruitments.
  • Supports the employer relations team with student-employer engagement efforts.
  • Facilitates employer engagement with students by identifying, locating, and referring eligible students to interview schedules and employers following standards of professional conduct from National Association of College and Employers (NACE).
  • Ensures quality work experiences for students by assisting employers in the development of position descriptions, which complement and enhance students' academic and professional goals.
  • Serves as an active University citizen by serving on committees, volunteering, etc.
  • Contributes to the overall success of the Career Design Center by developing professional knowledge, skills, abilities, and attitudes through engagement, active learning, and a growth mindset.
  • Supports the work of the Career Design Center through assigned administrative duties.
  • Raises funds through college and employer partners for specialized events, site visits, and speakers.
  • Teaches and develops curriculum specific for at least two academic courses per year.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualification:
  • Master's degree plus one year of experience OR Bachelor's degree plus 3 years of experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of career counseling, career testing, resource/best practice utilization, on-campus recruiting, job postings, resume referrals and career fairs/events.
  • Knowledge of career search strategies, including career coaching, mentoring, social networking, interviewing, and salary negotiation.
  • Knowledge of customer service standards expected in a robust high-tech, high-touch career center.
  • Public speaking, presentation, teaching/training, and one-on-one communication skills.
  • Skilled in the use of personal computers and related software applications.
  • Ability to coach students/alumni with regard to resume writing, cover letter writing, interviewing skills, and job search strategies.
  • Ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Ability to identify and develop employment opportunities at the internship, co-op and full-time levels.
  • Ability to create, compose, and edit written materials, including reports and presentations.
