Job summary

Job description

Career Counselor – Grant

University of South Carolina Upstate, Spartanburg, SC

The Career Counselor provides career development support to students through individual appointments and includes an emphasis on outreach associated with classroom presentations, workshops, and special events.

Responsibilities
  • Assist students with writing and revising resumes, cover letters, and personal statements as well as interview preparation.
  • Conduct workshops; organize career fairs and grad school events; and facilitate classroom presentations.
  • Initiate and build mutually beneficial partnerships with employers to develop opportunities for students and promote Handshake as a regular means of connecting all stakeholders.
  • Utilize technology (Handshake, Big Interview, Focus 2, Navigate, Outlook, LinkedIn) to engage students and other stakeholders with regular communication regarding internships, upcoming events, employment opportunities, interviewing, and career exploration.
  • Provide additional oversight for the Career Closet, including inventory management and seasonal clean-outs, tracking, processing donations, and tax receipting as requested.
  • Assist with regular tracking/data collection and participate in all monthly and annual reporting of individual/departmental activities.
  • Create and distribute a quarterly departmental newsletter for faculty, staff, administrators, students, alumni, employers, and other stakeholders.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Required Education and Experience

Requires a bachelor’s degree in a job-related field and 1 or more years of job-related experience, which may be substituted by an equivalent combination of job-related certification, training, education, and/or experience.

Preferred Qualifications

A master’s degree and/or prior experience working in career services or human resources.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

A successful background check is required. Excellent interpersonal skills are required as are the abilities to perform detailed work, deal with regular interruptions, handle multiple concurrent tasks, and maintain a high level of professionalism and confidentiality with regard to student records and information.

Salary

$41,258 – $43,660; Salary commensurate with education and experience.
