Job Description

I. General Summary

Under general supervision, performs cardiac diagnostic ultrasound procedures at a technical level, providing identification of cardiac structures, recognition of abnormalities, and documentation for later clinical interpretation. Fulfillment of the job duties requires access to medication storage areas.

II. Principal Responsibilities and Tasks

The following statements describe the general nature and level of work performed by personnel in this classification. They are not an exhaustive list of all job duties:

  • Performs non-invasive echocardiograms to assist the Anesthesiologist or Cardiologist in diagnosing, analyzing, and monitoring heart disorders according to departmental procedures.
  • Greets and receives patients, explains procedures, and informs patients or physicians of required preparations. Positions patients and assists them onto examining tables following departmental protocols. Communicates information regarding cardiac sonography procedures requiring patient preparation.
  • Performs clinical echocardiogram procedures of the heart, including real-time ultrasound and M-Mode imaging. Conducts quantitative analysis of studies to identify abnormalities and alerts physicians as necessary.
  • Reports potential or actual patient or equipment issues to supervisors or manufacturers. Troubleshoots minor equipment problems.
  • Recognizes and responds to emergency situations by utilizing CPR or contacting medical personnel.

III. Education and Experience

  • An Associate of Arts degree is preferred; at least 60 college-level credits are required. Must be registered as a Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers or hold CCI credentials through Cardiovascular Credentialing International.
  • Minimum of five years of experience performing echocardiography testing/procedures or equivalent is required.
  • CPR Certification is required.

IV. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills for interaction with patients and medical staff.
  • Proficient knowledge of anatomy, cardiology/echocardiology disease entities, and pattern recognition.
  • Proficient knowledge of ultrasound principles, including differentiation of cross-sectional anatomy, and maintaining a sterile field.
  • Ability to operate routine cardiology and monitoring equipment, including setting up echocardiogram procedures.
  • Ability to provide patient care appropriate to the population served, with understanding of growth and development principles across the lifespan.

Compensation:

Pay Range: $33.36 - $46.70
