Job description

Loma Linda University Faculty Medical Group, Department of Anesthesiology, is seeking a fellowship-trained, board-eligible or board-certified cardiothoracic anesthesiologist to join our section of Cardiac Anesthesia, where faculty practice both cardiac and general anesthesia. We are looking for a team player who enjoys teaching residents and fellows, who is drawn to mission-oriented medicine, and who wants to practice in a collegial environment where the people beside you are the best part of the job.

The Cardiac Practice

Our cardiac anesthesiologists support a full-service adult cardiac surgery program, including coronary revascularization, valve repair and replacement, aortic surgery, and an advanced heart failure program with heart transplantation and LVAD implantation. The division covers an established structural heart program (TAVR, mitral and tricuspid interventions) and a busy electrophysiology and cardiac catheterization service. Loma Linda is home to a pediatric and congenital heart program, and cardiac faculty with interest and training may participate in congenital cases. Most cardiac anesthesiologists also provide anesthesia for patients undergoing liver transplantation. Thoracic surgery and major vascular round out the practice. Perioperative TEE is central to the work, and faculty are supported in maintaining and advancing echocardiography skills and certification.

The General Practice

Unlike many academic cardiac divisions, ours does not confine faculty to the cardiac operating rooms and cath lab. Our cardiac anesthesiologists continue to practice general anesthesia alongside their cardiac work, with access to the same clinical assignments and sites available to the rest of the faculty, so you keep the full breadth of the specialty rather than trading it for a subspecialty. That practice spans a Level I trauma center, two surgical specialty hospitals within Loma Linda University Health, and a busy ambulatory surgery center. The overall case mix includes major abdominal, orthopedic, vascular, neurosurgical, ENT, and urologic cases, trauma, obstetrics, and non-operating-room anesthesia. Supervision of residents is typically 1:2 with CRNA supervision at 1:2, up to 1:4.

The Faculty

Our cardiac anesthesiologists, cardiac surgeons, cardiologists, perfusionists, intensivists, and nurses are a close-knit team that plans cases together, reviews outcomes together, and enjoys one another’s company. New faculty are mentored by experienced colleagues, and department leadership is accessible and values faculty input. We are looking for physicians who will do the same: relieve a colleague at the end of a long day, offer a second set of hands when a case does not proceed as anticipated, and take on the unassigned case without being asked.

Teaching

Our residents are the reason many of us chose academic practice. Cardiac faculty supervise residents on their cardiac and general rotations, as well as our ACGME-accredited adult cardiothoracic anesthesiology fellow, teaching perioperative echocardiography, hemodynamic management, and the care of patients with advanced heart failure and mechanical support. The strength of that clinical training shows in our graduates, who are sought after by private practices and academic departments alike. Advancement

Loma Linda University Health is an academic health system with an anesthesiology residency; fellowship programs in cardiothoracic anesthesiology, pediatric anesthesiology, acute pain and regional anesthesiology, liver transplant, and critical care; and an active clinical research program. Cardiac faculty advance along a defined academic track with support for promotion, and leadership roles are available in division leadership; advanced heart failure, heart transplant, and mechanical circulatory support; liver transplant anesthesia; structural heart; echocardiography education; quality and outcomes; and clinical research.

Compensation

Expected total annual compensation is $462,000 – $562,000. Starting base compensation of $450,000 – $520,000 is adjusted for years of experience and faculty rank; total compensation above base reflects variable and productivity-based pay under the department compensation plan. Faculty who want to work more can earn more through incentivized clinical work, additional shifts, and call. Details are discussed with the department during the recruitment process.

Candidates must have completed an ACGME-accredited adult cardiothoracic anesthesiology fellowship and be board certified or board eligible by the American Board of Anesthesiology. Advanced Perioperative TEE certification or eligibility is expected. Experience or interest in liver transplant anesthesia is welcome; training is provided for those new to transplant.
