Cardiologist Role:

The busy outpatient practice serves a large patient base and offers extensive outpatient testing, including 3-D echocardiography, nuclear stress testing, cardiac CT, and Holter monitoring. The cardiologists also see hospital consults on a weekly rotating basis and are qualified to interpret EKG, Holter, echocardiograms, and cardiac stress tests. There are 3 cardiac nurse practitioners in the hospital. The hospital offers EKG, echocardiography, Holter monitoring, nuclear stress testing, ICU, and cardiac telemetry, along with cardiac catheterization and coronary interventions. A nearby hospital provides electrophysiology, open heart surgery, and structural interventions, though routine rounding is not performed there. Inpatient duties include consults from hospitalists and may involve placement of temporary pacing wires, management of CHF, dysrhythmias, acute myocardial infarctions, and acutely-ill cardiac patients.

• Main types of procedures or patients seen: Non-invasive cardiology. Usual diagnoses include CHF, CAD, STEMI, Afib, cardiomyopathy. The team manages STEMI, interventional and structural cardiology, TEE, pacers, LifeVest, stress tests, Holters. Pulmonary Embolism interventional team is also involved.

Our group offers nuclear cardiology, cardiac CT, 3-D echo. Open heart surgery is available either nearby or in Boston within our network. Extraordinary cases can be referred to Brigham, MGH, St. Elizabeth's in Boston.

• Average patients seen per day: approximately 20, with one half-day weekly seeing around 10 patients. Cardiac NPs assist with hospital rounds and patient management. You will read EKGs, echocardiograms, and stress tests during hospital visits.

• Current staffing includes 7 cardiologists (one retiring, another leaving at year's end), 3 hospital NPs, ample office MAs, nurses, and frequent pacer reps.
