Job description

Overview

The physician assistant practices medicine under the supervision of a physician. They provide diagnostic, therapeutic, and preventive health care services, as delegated by a physician. Working as a member of the health care team, they take medical histories, examine and treat patients, order and interpret laboratory tests and x‑rays, and make diagnoses. They may also treat minor injuries by suturing, splinting and casting, record progress notes, instruct and counsel patients, order and carry out therapies, update charts, and, if eligible, prescribe some medications. In a surgical arena, they may provide pre‑operative and post‑operative care and possibly work as first or second assistants during major surgeries.



Responsibilities


  • Clinical Practice Expert: Provides advanced level of direct and indirect care to individual patients/families and/or groups of patients/families in collaboration with physicians and interdisciplinary team members.

  • Evidence‑Based Consultant & Researcher: Demonstrates collaborative leadership with researchers, other health professionals, divisions, and departments to generate knowledge and make practice changes based on research findings and results of organizational and departmental quality improvement processes.

  • Clinical Leadership: Provides leadership in meeting system, organizational, division, and departmental goals. Demonstrates accountability for professional responsibilities and self‑development.



Qualifications

Education/Formal Training Requirements: Master’s Degree in Physician Assistant.


Work Experience: 1–3 years of Physician Assistant work experience.


Licensing and Certifications: Certified Physician Assistants (CCPA), National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants; Licensed Physician Assistant in Tennessee by the Tennessee Board of Physician Assistants.



Supervision

There are no supervisory or lead responsibilities assigned to this position.



Physical Demands

Frequent invasive and non‑invasive patient contact; exposure to patient body fluids, hazardous or poisonous materials, excessive heat or cold as required; ability to react quickly to emergency situations; frequent travel outside hospital; frequent handling or administration of narcotics; ability to read and write to communicate orally and in writing; ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. without assistance and push and pull up to 250 lbs.; ability to sit, stand, walk, squat, kneel, reach, twist, crawl, and bend throughout the shift; good hand‑eye coordination.
