Job summary

Advocate Health is seeking a Nurse Extern in the Cardiac Surgical Unit (Nurse Extern) for December 2026 graduates to join the team in Milwaukee. The role involves working 8 hours per week as a student, with an August 2026 start date and supervision by an RN to support patient care in a high-acuity environment.

The position requires current enrollment in an accredited nursing program and, ideally, a Nursing Assistant certification.

Qualifications

• Currently enrolled in an accredited or approved nursing program.
• Successful completion of a Medical Surgical course that includes pharmacological concepts.
• Good interpersonal skills and the ability to adapt to interruptions and changing priorities/workload.

Responsibilities

• Under RN supervision, complete activities of daily living, vital signs, and glucose monitoring.
• Collaborate with RN to establish a care plan based on patient needs and family preferences.
• Under RN supervision, assess patient responses and communicate needs to the RN.
• Develop delegation skills for Health Unit Coordinators and nursing assistants.
• Administer medication as delegated by the RN after demonstrating required skills.
• Manage more patients and apply time-management within shift.
• Gather and synthesize patient data to determine needs.
• Assist in emergencies under supervision.
• Perform patient positioning and transport tasks safely.
• Provide age-appropriate care and understand developmental needs.
