Job summary

MedStar Health’s Washington Hospital Center is seeking a skilled Surgical Assistant to provide first, second, or third assistance during open heart and vascular procedures under physician direction. You will support pre- and post-operative patient care and contribute to quality and safety in a high-stakes cardiac surgery setting.

Ideal candidates have an Associate’s degree or higher, NSAA certification or equivalent training, and strong verbal/written communication skills.

Qualifications

• Requires Associate's degree or higher; NSAA certification or related discipline may be required.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Good judgment and ability to work in high-stakes cardiac surgery settings.

Responsibilities

• Assist during open heart and other vascular and thoracic surgeries under physician direction.
• Support pre- and post-operative patient care and documentation.
• Ensure sterile field and assist with cannulation, grafting, valve repair/replacement, and IABP procedures.
• Assist anesthesia and monitoring, venipuncture, IV starts and specimen collection.
• Participate in rounds, teaching, and quality/safety improvements.
