Job summary

Rochester Regional Health seeks a Per Diem Echocardiography Technologist for Rochester General and Unity Hospitals. You will perform diagnostic echocardiographic exams using 2D, M-Mode, color flow and Doppler per accepted protocols.

Responsibilities include patient preparation, image acquisition, assignment into PACS, and note generation for reading cardiologist. RDCS/RCS credentials and 2+ years in cardiac imaging are required; per diem weekday evenings and/or weekends.

Qualifications

  • RDCS or RCS credentials required; 2 years of cardiac imaging experience or equivalent education.
  • Two to four year college degree in health imaging preferred.
  • One to three years of experience as a Registered Sonographer beneficial.

Responsibilities

  • Explain procedure and provide instructions to ensure patient cooperation and safety.
  • Obtain and review imaging, enter demographics, position patient, and obtain measurements; transfer study to PACS.
  • Document critical findings times and cardiologist notification; maintain procedure logs and QA records.
  • Clean equipment after each procedure; report equipment issues and coordinate with BioMedical Engineering.

Job description

STATUS: Per Diem LOCATION: Rochester General Hospital & Unity Hospital DEPARTMENT: Non-Invasive Cardiology SCHEDULE: Per Diem; Weekday Evenings and/or Weekends 7 am - 3:30 pm

SUMMARY

Performs medically prescribed diagnostic echocardiographic procedures to assess cardiac structures and hemodynamics, utilizing various modes and techniques, including but not limited to 2-dimensional, M-Mode, color flow, pulse wave, and continuous wave Doppler, in accordance with accepted protocols.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Patient Care. Explain procedure with instructions, to ensure patient cooperation, patient safety, and optimal results; assist patient during transfer from wheelchair, stretcher, or bed to exam table; provide individualized patient care (i.e., request interpreter, ambulation, toileting, etc.) as needed
  • Imaging. Review patient chart and history; utilize imaging protocols and standards; enter patient demographics on ultrasound machine; utilize proper patient positioning techniques to obtain optimal image quality; obtain all measurements required for study; end and transfer study to cardiology PACS; access preliminary diagnostic report and formulate an initial interpretation for the reading cardiologist
  • Documentation. Record the time of the critical finding and the time at which the cardiologist was notified; documentation may include the patient’s EMR/progress notes, documented and signed procedure performed, date and time completed; record procedure information in appropriate procedure logs, used to gather information for echocardiography QA/QI
  • Equipment Management. Clean equipment after each procedure with approved cleaning products; report equipment failures to supervisory staff as needed; contact BioMedical Engineering and/or manufacturer’s service representative, as directed
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Appropriate credentials in echocardiography from a Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) from the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) or Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS). 2 years of experience in cardiac imaging or related field, or Certificate, Associate's, or Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited cardiac echo sonographer program, or Equivalent combination of education and experience.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Two (2) to four (4) year college degree in health-related imaging (ultrasound, radiology) preferred
  • One (1) to three (3) years of experience as a Registered Sonographer
  • Superior customer service and communication skills
  • Strong attention to detail
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Moderate - Clinical - Moderate clinical roles are patient facing roles that require continual movement, including standing, walking, and lifting 20–50 lbs., along with pushing and pulling medical equipment and assisting with patient positioning. Employees perform frequent bending, twisting, and reaching while completing fine motor tasks in busy or confined clinical environments. High sensory acuity is essential for monitoring patient status and responding to alarms or safety concerns. Emotional and cognitive demands are substantial, involving decision-making under pressure, responding to emergencies, and maintaining sustained focus. Environmental exposures include infectious agents, bodily fluids, chemicals, and radiation. TB testing, mask-fit testing, and physical exams are common requirements. For disease specific care programs refer to the program specific requirements of the department for further specifications on experience and educational expectations, including continuing education requirements.
