Job Summary :
To provide care that is patient and family centered in both inpatient and outpatient environments that exemplifies best practice, fosters relationship based care and maintains the integrity of professional exercise physiologist standards and nursing standards. Practice care guidelines are based on the ANA code of ethics, professional code of conduct and standards from American Society of Exercise Physiologists, and regulatory agency standards by which the exercise physiologists provides care in collaboration with the RN and/or RT.
Job Description
Essential Responsibilities:
Specific to Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation
- Work with other CR and PR staff including Registered Nurses and Respiratory Therapists to evaluate patients on admission, including diagnosis, abilities and limitations. Be aware of other comorbidities affecting patient care.
- Create an exercise prescription based on individual needs and goals through evaluation and observation of the patient.
- Lead Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation classes in stretches, resistance training, and use of exercise equipment.
- Evaluate patients at each session by observing blood pressure, heart rate, perceived exertion, and physical symptoms to progress patients through the program.
- Provide education to patients regarding heart-healthy lifestyle choices.
- Assist with scheduling patients referred to Cardiac Rehab.

- Perform duties of non-invasive cardiopulmonary diagnostic procedures under physician's order or supervision after training and competency evaluation: ECG, rhythm strip, heart monitor hook-up, treadmill stress test, nuclear stress test, stress ECHO tests, and DOB echo and nuclear test.
- Record cardiopulmonary history relevant to testing or procedures.
- Maintain departmental statistical and individual productivity records.
- Act as part of the cardiac fast teams for inpatient units.
- Use medical skills considering patient age, diagnosis, and physical abilities.
- Edit ECG and stress testing reports as per policy.
- Interact with patients and physicians in receipt, review, scanning, and reporting of event recorders.

- Support leadership and implementation of scheduling and supply changes to ensure quality and cost-effective care.

- Chart and document initial and daily assessment data in patient records.
- Assess patient pre, during, and post exercise, making appropriate referrals and recommendations.

- Participate in quality improvement activities, data collection, and organizational change.
- Participate in initial assessment and orientation of new participants; assist in developing individualized care plans with team members.
- Contribute expertise as a multidisciplinary team member to offer comprehensive treatment strategies.
- Demonstrate interpersonal and observational skills to identify psychosocial issues and signs of illness or psychopathology.
- Participate in collection, analysis, and reporting of outcomes.
3. Patient Satisfaction
- Work to improve patient satisfaction and assist RNs in developing improvement strategies.
- Utilize health behavior change theories to aid participants in learning and lifestyle modifications.
- Assess modifiable risk factors and support therapeutic lifestyle changes.
- Demonstrate relationship-based care models.
4. Patient Safety
- Supervise exercise sessions, monitoring responses and applying exercise science knowledge.
- Adjust individual exercise prescriptions based on patient response and physician recommendations.
- Report any significant changes or conditions immediately.
- Follow safety principles and emergency response plans.
5. Professional Growth
- Identify personal limitations, seek assistance, and pursue proficiency in core competencies.
- Participate in departmental initiatives and share knowledge with colleagues.
- Complete onboarding and ongoing education requirements.
- Identify professional development needs and collaborate on learning opportunities.
- Follow up on identified needs and implement correction plans.

Education and Experience Required:
- Bachelor's degree in health-related field or Exercise Science.
- Minimum one year of cardiology experience preferred if degree is in health-related field.
- Area-specific required education (e.g., ACLS, BLS) obtained upon hire and maintained.
Licensure Preferred:
- ACSM Certified Exercise Physiologist (EP-C)
- ASEP Board Certified Exercise Physiologist (EPC)
