Job description

At RyeStrategy, we’re on a mission to drive meaningful action in the fight against climate change. We help small and medium-sized businesses and leading enterprises like Salesforce and Atlassian turn sustainability goals into measurable progress. Our work spans carbon accounting, reduction strategies, reporting, and supplier engagement, including helping suppliers strengthen their sustainability practices, meet customer expectations, and better position their businesses to win RFPs.

We’re known for white-glove service. Our team and software makes carbon management easy and affordable, from footprinting and mitigation strategies to offset portfolios and sustainability reporting. Our clients choose us because of the people they work with every day, and this role is one of those people.

As our client base grows, we’re adding an additional Carbon Consultant to our client services team. Join us and make a tangible impact with your clients and on the future of sustainability, one relationship at a time.

About the Role:

We’re looking for a client-obsessed professional who is passionate about sustainability. In this role you will be the trusted, day-to-day partner for a portfolio of clients and guide them through their carbon accounting, emissions reduction, and reporting frameworks. In this role, you’ll guide clients through the entire GHG accounting process as their main point of contact to provide hands‑on support at every stage. You’ll report directly to our Head of Sustainability and Client Services, owning and delivering on your own set of client engagements.

Most of your day will be spent with clients on back-to-back calls. You’ll walk clients through data requests, answer questions, solve problems, and make sure they feel supported at every step. If being the person clients rely on energizes you, you’ll thrive in this role.

Like tax and accounting, carbon reporting has peak seasons, typically March through June. During that window, this role should expect longer hours, a high volume of client interaction, and a lot of deadline driven work. We’re looking for individuals who rise to that challenge and find it rewarding.

Post‑busy season we offer our Client Service team members summer Fridays (July-August), small tokens of appreciation, and other ways to acknowledge and show gratitude for the hard work put in with our clients.

Required Qualifications (Must-Haves)
  • 2+ years in a client‑facing role as a primary point of contact, such as consulting, account management, client success, public accounting/tax, or agency work.
  • A track record and desire to go above and beyond for clients
  • A real passion for sustainability, shown through coursework, certifications, volunteering, side projects or previous roles.
  • Comfort with a seasonal workload, including longer hours and heavy client contact/deliverables during peak reporting periods.
  • Strong organization and project management skills, with the ability to juggle multiple clients and deadlines without dropping details.
  • Foundational understanding of sustainability concepts, with a willingness to deepen carbon emissions knowledge quickly.
Preferred Qualifications (Nice-to-Haves)
  • Understanding of GHG accounting concepts (Scopes 1, 2, and 3) and hands‑on experience developing GHG inventories under the GHG Protocol.
  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental sciences, business, sustainability, or a related field.
  • Experience working with complex or global organizations across multiple industries.
  • Familiarity with life cycle assessments (LCAs) and/or product carbon footprinting.
  • Knowledge of ESG reporting standards (e.g., GRI, SASB).
  • Experience with carbon accounting software or CRM tools like Hubspot
  • Flexibility to meet with clients across various timezones.
To be successful in this role, you should be:
  • Energized by client interaction. You’d rather be on a call solving a client’s problem than working alone on a spreadsheet all day.
  • A natural relationship builder. Warm, professional, and confident representing yourself and RyeStrategy with clients and partners.
  • Resilient under pressure. You keep your energy, quality, and composure through busy periods.
  • Passionate about sustainability and motivated to drive meaningful environmental change within the corporate sector.
  • Highly organized, skilled at managing your time, deliverables, and competing client deadlines, with a strong focus on accuracy and accountability.
  • Comfortable self-managing, including tracking project progress and hours while balancing multiple priorities.
  • Entrepreneurial in spirit, excited about startups and eager to play a pivotal role in a growing organization.
  • An excellent communicator, with strong skills in written, verbal, and visual formats.
  • Curious and quick to learn, open to leveraging AI in ways that optimize your work, thrive in a fast-paced and sometimes ambiguous environment.
Role Specifics:
  • Remote-first, with occasional in-person meetings or team activities
  • Salary: $72,000-$76,000 base per year, depending on experience
  • Additional commissions for securing client renewals and driving retention success
  • Company-provided laptop and essential software/tools
  • Monthly stipend to assist with personal wellness or home office expenses
  • Must be based in the United States
  • Full professional proficiency or native/bilingual proficiency in English
  • Join a mission-driven startup with opportunities to grow as the company expands.
Goals & Expectations for Success in This Role

As a Carbon Consultant, your top priority is giving every client an outstanding experience. You'll own the client relationship and deliver accurate, well-organized work, with technical support from our Sustainability Director and senior consultants.

  • Serve as the day-to-day contact for 70-90 active clients by 1-year.
  • Lead regular client calls, respond promptly, manage expectations, and escape challenges when needed.
  • Anticipate client questions and send proactive updates so clients always know where things stand.
  • Build lasting relationships that drive renewals and retention, working with the Client Success team.
  • Bring client feedback and insights to internal discussions about services, methodologies, and tools.
Carbon Accounting & Project Delivery
  • Guide clients through data requests and ensure Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions data is collected, cleaned, and organized on time.
  • Support accurate and well-documented emissions calculations, methodologies, and assumptions in alignment with the GHG Protocol.
  • Help prepare client deliverables, such as reduction recommendations, reports, and presentations, that are clear, professional and actionable.
  • Track project progress and time allocation in HubSpot, ensuring visibility for leadership, finance and other team contributors.
Core Value Alignment
  • Unmatched Customer Advocacy: You put client needs at the center of your daily work. You anticipate questions, address concerns, and go above and beyond to deliver real value.
  • People-Focused: You build trust with clients and teammates by listening, clarifying, and aligning around shared goals. You stay respectful and professional, even under pressure.
  • Passion for Our Work: You bring enthusiasm to every engagement, motivated by helping organizations make measurable progress on sustainability.
  • Do What We Say: You meet timelines and commitments, keep clients and teammates informed, and keep documentation current.
  • Solutions-Oriented: You treat client challenges as solvable, using creativity and a methodical approach to balance data limitations, client needs, and methodology.
