Job summary

Department of Enterprise Services (DES) seeks a Civic Education Supervisor to lead the Washington State Capitol tour operations, delivering meaningful experiences for visitors and school groups. You will report to the Visitor Services Manager and drive strategies to grow the Capitol Security and Visitor Services program.

You will oversee staffing, scheduling, training, and daily operations, ensuring a welcoming, accessible, and viewpoint-neutral experience while coordinating with agency partners

Qualifications

• Six (6) years of progressive experience in community, youth and public engagement.
• Knowledge of civics, the legislative process and/or Washington State history.
• Experience speaking in front of large groups.
• Experience giving tours or supervising a tour program.
• Experience developing and creating educational activities and material.

Responsibilities

• Oversee daily Civic Education program operations including tour scheduling and system configurations.
• Supervise tour staff including hiring, training, scheduling, evaluations, and HR/IT actions.
• Create and distribute detailed daily tour plans and coordinate logistics with partners and staff.
• Resolve escalated customer service and sensitive visitor issues using de-escalation techniques.
• Develop and administer interim civic activities and interpretive space for visitors.
• Maintain training manuals and conduct annual training for guides and backup staff.
• Manage internal and external communications about tour information and updates.
• Advise leadership on operational challenges and program improvements using stakeholder feedback.
• Represent DES by managing buildings, enforcing rules and collaborating with security and maintenance.
• Provide direct visitor services support during staff shortages, including conducting tours and campus events.
