Job summary

Job description

The County of San Luis Obispo's Public Works Department is looking for a Capital Projects Inspector to join our team. Under direction, Capital Projects Inspectors perform inspection services for County capital improvement, facility construction, and remodeling projects; assists in capital project coordination activities; and performs other related work as required.

Typical Tasks and Representative Duties
  • Works under direction as a project inspector
  • Reviews building plans for conformance with legal requirements
  • Makes field inspections for conformance with plans, contract documents, building codes, and County ordinances
  • Processes payments, purchase orders and change orders
  • May act as coordinating liaison among County officials, consultants, contractors, architects, engineers, in a variety of construction projects
  • Prepares a variety of records and reports relating to construction projects
Knowledge of:
  • The principles and techniques of building and public works construction
  • Building materials and various building codes
  • Construction management principles
  • Scheduling and negotiating
  • Public Contracts Codes.
Ability to:
  • Read and interpret building plans and specifications
  • Detect violations and report them
  • Ensure compliance with approved plans and specifications in a firm and impartial manner
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships
  • Maintain accurate records and reportsBe physically capable of moving safely around construction sites.
Education and Experience

A combination of education, training, and experience resulting in the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. An example of qualifying education and experience includes:
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor of Science degree in Architecture, Engineering, Construction Engineering, Construction Management, or a closely related field,AND;
Either A:Four years of experience in building design, construction management, or construction inspection.
OR B:Two years of experience performing duties equivalent to the Associate Capital Projects Coordinator classification.

Licenses and Certificates

This classification requires driving as an essential job function. A valid California driver’s license is required at the time of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment.
