Job summary

About the Role:

Arcadis is seeking a talented Capital Project Engineer with strong HVAC experience to support capital project delivery in pharmaceutical, biotech, and other regulated manufacturing environments in Boston, MA. The ideal candidate will have significant experience leading and executing HVAC-related capital projects, including facility upgrades, utility improvements, equipment installations, cleanroom/system modifications, and infrastructure expansions. This role requires a deep understanding of GMP environments, regulated project delivery, HVAC systems, and the ability to lead cross-functional teams to deliver safe, compliant, and business-critical engineering solutions from concept through commissioning and qualification.

Key Responsibilities:
Project Management & Execution
  • Lead, plan, coordinate, and execute capital projects related to regulated pharmaceutical or biotech facility operations, with an emphasis on HVAC-driven infrastructure, utility, and facility upgrades.
  • Manage project scope, schedules, budgets, resources, risks, and milestones to ensure successful delivery of capital investments.
  • Interface with internal stakeholders, design teams, vendors, contractors, Quality, Validation, Operations, and EHS to align HVAC and facility designs with technical, operational, compliance, and business requirements.
HVAC, Facility Design & Equipment Integration
  • Lead or support the design, modification, and integration of HVAC systems, cleanrooms, controlled environments, utilities, and manufacturing support areas.
  • Oversee the selection, specification, installation, and turnover of HVAC and facility equipment, ensuring compliance with applicable industry standards and site requirements.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure seamless integration of systems and equipment into operations.
Engineering & Technical Expertise
  • Provide subject matter expertise in HVAC systems, critical utilities, building automation, cleanroom environmental control, air handling systems, chillers, exhaust systems, and related plant utilities.
  • Develop and review engineering drawings, specifications, P&IDs, equipment layouts, URS documents, change controls, RFIs, and project documentation.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvements, energy efficiency, and cost savings.
Compliance & Validation
  • Ensure capital projects and HVAC systems comply with GMP, FDA, OSHA, EHS, quality, validation, and other applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Support commissioning, qualification, validation, FAT/SAT, turnover, and documentation activities for HVAC, facility, utility, and equipment-related projects.
  • Address and resolve technical issues related to plant systems during design, construction, and operation.
  • Act as a liaison between the engineering team, operations, and quality departments.
  • Provide mentorship and technical guidance to junior engineers and technicians.
Required Qualifications:
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Chemical, Electrical, or Industrial Engineering (or related field).
  • Experience:
  • 5+ years of experience leading or supporting capital projects in pharmaceutical, biotech, life sciences, or other regulated manufacturing environments.
  • Significant hands-on experience with HVAC-related capital projects, including design coordination, system upgrades, commissioning, qualification, and operational turnover.
Technical Skills:
  • Demonstrated knowledge of HVAC systems, cleanroom environments, critical utilities, building automation systems, and facility infrastructure in regulated settings.
  • Proficient in reviewing engineering drawings, specifications, technical documentation, and project deliverables; CAD/AutoCAD experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of cGMP, FDA, EMA, commissioning/qualification, validation, change control, and regulated project delivery practices.
Soft Skills:

Excellent communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or PMP certification.
  • Experience with advanced technologies like single-use systems, continuous manufacturing, or automation in pharma/biotech processes.
