Workplace: Onsite in Pleasanton, CA

Position Title: Product Manager, Capillary Electrophoresis Software

Position Type: Direct hire

Salary range: $120,000-180,000

Overview

We are seeking an experienced Product Manager to lead the strategy, development, and lifecycle management of a software portfolio supporting capillary electrophoresis (CE) and genetic analysis workflows.

This is an opportunity to influence how scientists, laboratory professionals, and technical users generate, analyze, interpret, and act on complex data. You will help transform customer needs into intuitive, high-value software capabilities that improve usability, strengthen the value of an established instrument installed base, and enable the next generation of intelligent scientific workflows.

A major focus of this role will be identifying and delivering appropriate applications of artificial intelligence, machine learning, automation, and advanced data analysis. The successful candidate will balance innovation with scientific rigor, customer trust, cybersecurity, data integrity, and the requirements of quality-controlled or regulated environments.

Based in Pleasanton, California, you will work closely with a local Software R&D organization and collaborate across product management, engineering, applications, marketing, commercial, service, quality, regulatory, and other functions.

What You’ll Do
Define Product Strategy and Roadmap
  • Own the vision, strategy, roadmap, and lifecycle plans for CE software products.
  • Develop a deep understanding of customer workflows, laboratory environments, pain points, and unmet needs.
  • Translate customer, market, and business insights into clear product requirements, priorities, and investment recommendations.
  • Manage products across the full software lifecycle, including new releases, enhancements, maintenance, compatibility, cybersecurity, technical debt, and end-of-life planning.
  • Build business cases and prioritize initiatives based on customer value, market opportunity, technical feasibility, strategic alignment, and business impact.
  • Define and monitor performance indicators related to adoption, engagement, usability, customer satisfaction, and commercial performance.
  • Partner with product leaders responsible for instruments, consumables, applications, and services to create a connected end-to-end customer experience.
Advance AI and Software Innovation
  • Identify opportunities to apply AI and machine learning to CE data analysis and laboratory workflows.
  • Develop product concepts, requirements, and business cases for capabilities such as:
  • Automated data analysis and interpretation
  • Workflow automation
  • Decision support
  • Pattern recognition and anomaly detection
  • Personalized guidance and improved user experiences
  • Work with Software R&D, data science, informatics, and subject-matter experts to evaluate the feasibility, usability, and scientific value of emerging technologies.
  • Help establish a responsible approach to AI-enabled product development, addressing data quality, scientific validity, explainability, privacy, security, customer trust, and applicable regulatory or quality expectations.
  • Monitor developments in AI, bioinformatics, scientific software, digital laboratories, and adjacent markets to identify opportunities for the CE portfolio.
Partner with Software R&D
  • Serve as the primary product management partner to the Software R&D team.
  • Convert customer and market needs into well-defined use cases, requirements, priorities, and acceptance criteria.
  • Participate in planning, backlog refinement, release planning, and prioritization activities.
  • Balance innovation with product quality, reliability, cybersecurity, compatibility, maintainability, and technical-debt reduction.
  • Make informed product trade-offs with engineering and cross-functional partners to deliver meaningful capabilities on appropriate timelines.
  • Support verification, validation, beta programs, usability studies, and customer evaluations.
  • Maintain strong alignment between R&D, commercial, service, marketing, quality, and regulatory stakeholders throughout the product development lifecycle.
Bring the Customer and Market Perspective
  • Build expertise in CE customers, applications, laboratory workflows, competitive products, and market dynamics.
  • Engage directly with customers, key opinion leaders, field teams, applications specialists, and other stakeholders.
  • Validate product concepts through customer discovery, workflow observation, interviews, feedback sessions, and structured evaluations.
  • Conduct competitive analysis across scientific software, informatics platforms, analytical technologies, and emerging digital solutions.
  • Represent the voice of the customer in roadmap, investment, prioritization, and lifecycle decisions.
  • Partner with marketing and commercial teams on positioning, value propositions, launch plans, enablement, and customer-facing messaging.
What You’ll Bring
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in life sciences, engineering, computer science, bioinformatics, or a related discipline.
  • At least 7 years of experience in product management, software product management, R&D, applications, or a related function within life sciences, diagnostics, biotechnology, scientific instrumentation, or a comparable industry.
  • Demonstrated success translating customer needs and scientific workflows into software product requirements.
  • Experience partnering effectively with software engineering or R&D teams.
  • Strong analytical, strategic, and problem-solving skills, including the ability to prioritize across competing technical, customer, and business needs.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills.
  • Strong cross-functional leadership and stakeholder management capabilities.
  • Ability to work effectively in a matrixed organization with both technical and non-technical partners.
  • Willingness and ability to engage directly with customers and understand how scientific work is performed in real-world laboratory environments.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with capillary electrophoresis, genetic analysis, DNA sequencing, fragment analysis, molecular biology, or related technologies.
  • Experience managing scientific, analytical, informatics, data analysis, instrument-control, or laboratory software.
  • Familiarity with Agile product development and modern software development practices.
  • Experience developing or commercializing AI- or machine-learning-enabled software.
  • Working knowledge of generative AI, machine learning, data science, or their application to scientific workflows.
  • Experience with software lifecycle management for an established installed base, including compatibility, cybersecurity, supportability, and end-of-life planning.
  • Experience working in a regulated, quality-controlled, or highly validated product development environment.
  • Advanced degree such as an MS, MBA, PhD, or equivalent experience in a relevant scientific, technical, or business discipline.
